I'm fine with a FPS as long as the FPS is constant, 40-60 is fine for me but I can handle 20-30 if there aren't any noticeable framerate spikes.

As for RTS, any rate is good as long as it doesn't make the cursor jumpy or scrolling choppy and reduce micro and macro abilities, 20-30 fps constant is enough.

For an RPG well... I can handle being in the low 20s... but some games like Oblivion are better at 30+

I've been gaming on a 9600SE and I beat many FPS at crappy framerates so I'm used to it, and you don't need absurd framerates to play even the fastest shooters correctly, I'm the best UT2004 player (instagib) among my friends, and I play at 20-40 while my friends all play at 60fps...

FPS, absolute minimum of 20FPS (short stints). I like to have 30FPS+ on average.
RTS, wtv, Empire Earth two lagged the crap out of my old A64 2800+/6800nu when I had a lot of units, probably minimum 10FPS but I'd rather have 20FPS+. It still hustles my E6400 and 8800GTS a little.
RPG, never played on the PC but I guess it would be the same as my FPS preferences.

You guys are too 1337 :p I can't even tell the difference between 30FPS and 60FPS, maybe my brain is slow, lol, I like my graphics better than FPS anyways :) I only check the FPS if the game feels sluggish.

FPS: >60 (>80 is ideal for the smoothness, >100=perfect)
Are you serious? Are you still using a CRT monitor? Because most TFT monitor's have a refreshrate between 60 and 70. Have you anything heard of the placebo effect yet?
I bet you would not recognize the difference between 50 an "100" fps.

I think more than 30 fps is ok. Nobody needs more fps as long as his skill is not out of range.(ESL-Players) ;)

30-40 FPS for shooters (including online) is fine for me.
25-30 FPS for RPG's
25-30 FPS for RTS games

Anyway, in CS:S @ 1280x1024 with everyone on max and 4xAA/16xAF, I get around 110 FPS. It's pretty smooth. Generally I just keep adjusting until I get a smooth feeling game. Back when I had a 6600GT I usually had to use low to medium settings to get games like FEAR to run smoothly.

Among modern games, I have only played FPSs and want the framerate over 60 at all times in singleplayer games and 100 all the time in multiplayer ones. I generally have to drop some graphical settings down to get that, but that's fine with me. I don't care about the averages.

For the last six months I've mostly been playing games that are several years old, in which the framerates remain good at any settings, so I don't need to worry about this.

ive noticed the same thing....too bad my CRT monitor cant do over 60hz refresh rate at the resolution I play at. And it would SUCK to be stuck with an LCD, locked at a maximum of 60fps all the time. Thank God for old technology :)

I can handle anything over 30 FPS for any genre... as long at the 30 FPS is solid and not an average. Obviously I prefer more FPS, but 30 has yet to hinder my abilities.

No. But then again, have you ever frozen a frame of a film? See the motion blur? That's why it's not jerky. Games don't have this.
