I had an assignment to identify an unknown compound in chemistry class today and I've identified it as CuSO4.5H20

So I've got a dry compound of CuSO4 and a hydrated compound of CuSO4.5H2O?

The question asks me to identify the hydrated solid.

Do I answer as "Copper(II) sulfate" or "Copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate"?

Copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate is the precise answer they are looking for - anhydrous Copper Sulphate is a different compound. Seems to me the old colloquial name for this was "bluestone", but I don't recommend you use that.

I don't fucking know.

this.

I took one chemistry course in college. That was far more than I'd ever desire.

Though strangely, I also enjoyed that stuff. I just hated the labs, I felt like I never had enough fucking time. I moved like a turtle in chem lab because I'm a perfectionist, didn't want to fuck up at any stage.
I don't get how some of those fuckers were out of there 30 minutes before lab was over.

Same.

My chemistry 101 professor told us a story about this on one of the first few days of class.

"One time we ordered the hydrous copper sulfate for our chemistry lab. The secretary messed up the order and instead we received the anhydrous copper sulfate. We all had a big laugh about that as you can imagine."

I think someone got up and left immediately. :p
