What do you call behind the lower ear?

What body part or organ is right behind the lower ear. My gf seems to have a lump there. Is that her thyroid or a lymph node? Both parents have had problems with their thyroids. Any ideas? She's going to see a doctor but in the mean time, I'd like to know what it is called.

there is a gland there that when your ill swells up.
Also part of the sinuses are in that area.
