Sounds like a mix of formal logic and "informal" logic (critical thinking) where you learn about why a statement supports an argument or does not.
For example, a common tactic in arguments is to make an "ad hominem" attack such as "no, the sky is not blue because you're a dirty Commie!". Ad hominem is latin for "against the man," and means to try to disprove another point of view by attacking a person instead of their evidence.
