Yeah....too many things wrong with that statement. You do realize that it's fiction with a political agenda, don't you...? This is what President Roosevelt said about Sinclair:

"I have an utter contempt for him. He is hysterical, unbalanced, and untruthful. Three-fourths of the things he said were absolute falsehoods. For some of the remainder there was only a basis of truth.” (Source: letter to William Allen White, July 31, 1906, from “The Letters of Theodore Roosevelt,” 8 vols, Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 1951-54, vol. 5, p. 340.)

I haven't read Sinclair's The Jungle since high school. However I believe he exaggerated food safety procedures as a rhetorical tool in order to incite furor and accentuate overall poor working conditions -- which weren't at all fictional. In that respect, the Triangle Shirtwaist factory fire (occurring 5 years after the Jungle was published) was also a large turning point in worker rights and safety....

I personally try to eat the whole animal, including bone and organ meat. Asians eat this way and are extremely healthy. So that aspect of hot dogs and sausages containing whole animal parts doesn't bother me, especially if they employ natural animal casing.

However I avoid any foods with food preservatives such as nitrites and nitrates and instead opt for fresh foods.

Hot dogs are just the industrialized manifestation of the "use every part of the animal" mantra. 😀

It's pretty much all the parts that would normally not be sold as cuts of meat. Lips, anus, penis, internal organs, eye balls etc. If they have a rodent problem in the building, they probably throw rats and mice in there too, whatever they can find that can be grinded up really.

If you buy from a real butcher I'd imagine the quality is probably better and they use mostly real meat. But hey, if it taste good on the BBQ, don't overthink what's in it. 😛

Chorizo has some things that sound pretty unappealing....

Salivary glands and lymph nodes. YUM!

Knew a woman that worked at a plant and I asked her this question and she said "lips and assholes." LOL

It's why I buy Hebrew hot dogs.

As long as it tastes good, who cares? I've been eating sausage/hot dog/slim jims/etc since I was a kid. I have an idea what's in those, but so fucking what? I'll keep eating the mechanically separated/whatever goodness.

Its pretty damn close to 50% fat.

Nitrosamines formed from sodium nitrate curing are some of the most well established carcinogens. There was actually a major push to reduce stomach cancer rates in the 70's by reducing the amount of nitrosamines formed in food processing. Antioxidants help prevent their formation but they are still there. Stomach cancer rates did in fact go down.

What goes in a sausage?

Anything that you wouldn't be able to sell if it wasn't minced up and squeezed into tubes.
