What do they mean when they say 3 month's salary for a ring?

Well, the kind of women I hang out with are far more likely to be ohhing and ahing over the quality of the man I'm marrying rather than some stupid ring I could easily buy for myself, but then that's just me🙂

Ah, but I wish more women could be like you. As ActPrincess points out, for the vast majority of women, it's all about a woman's status amongst her friends; the expensive ring the visible indicator that she was good enough to attract and snare the wealthy alpha-male. Invariably, after hearing "I just got engaged!", the next statement is "let's see the ring!" which the woman then proudly shows off.
Like I said, one of the greatest marketing campaigns ever.
Lucky for me, my GF laughs at those women and calls those expensive diamonds rings the "Crystal Knuckle." 😀
She would rather see us live a mostly debt-free life with a nice house, cars, belongings, and regular vacations than trying to appeal to the image demands of others. Like me, she sees that life is a matter of priorities.

Yep! There is certainly no correlation between ring size and success of marriage, though there is one between lack of financial ability and failed marriages (since money is often a key problem in an unstable marriage).

Putting yourself in debt for a ring is just pure and simple freaking asinine.

But money doesn't seem to help JLo. What gives?

$10k gets you close to 2.0 carats and that rock is HUGE. Depends on your lady's hand size... but I don' think 2.0 carats is a good fit for anybody.

er... If you get rocks(diamond) with ideal cut shape, E or better Color, VVS1 or better clearity, 10K isn't going anywhere near 2.0 carats. 🙁

its a trick to get you to spend an outrageous amount for a frickin rock that just sits on her finger for 40 years

nobody should spend more than $500 for a wedding ring

Money is one factor; nothing can outweigh stupidity's ability to usurp the success of any union.

Bah, three months. How much you spend on a ring depends how much you make and how big of a gold digger is your future wife is.

CostOfRing / HowMuchYourPayCheckAtBurgerKingGetsYou = Weeks

whoa... i was not expecting such a large thread from this... uh anyways thanks guys 😛

i think it's BS too, i was just curious.

The diamond industry has had one of the best records of advertising return-on-investment in history.
One of their old ones was: "Diamonds are a girl's best friend".
The three month's salary thing is theirs too, and most people believe it w/o question, and fall in line to buy.

lol, are some of you guys serious that if you make 50K/yr you should spend 10K on a freaking ring??

I'd rather just put that towards a down on a house or something.
