What do the Mormons hope to gain by bothering me at home?!

So I'm sitting there watching TV and eating (Wendy's - mmmmm) when my doorbell rings and two guys want to talk to me about their church. Not only did I tell them I wasn't interested but that I also had to be somewhere (I didn't, but usually people will take the hint) but these guys wouldn't quit. They wanted to know if there was a better time they could come back or even CALL before coming back. They finally left, but not before giving me a card to call and have their book or whatever sent to me. Do they actually think that by bothering me at my HOME, they're going to get me to take them seriously or join them. Good god stuff like this annoys me. I just want to be able to sit in my house without having other people push their beliefs on me. Is that really too much to ask?

A little antisocial, aren't we? Why do you have a doorbell? Sounds like it's time to put up the razor wire & guard dogs.

Seriously, part of the LDS upbringing includes the responsibility for the guys to go on a two year mission in order to talk to others about joining the church. So they're just doing their 'job'.

I know how you feel. I was home enjoying a porn movie yesterday, and these two jerks in black suits knocked on my door. They said they want to tell me about the LDS church, I said "I'm not interested", they kept on talking, I slammed the door.

Glad to know I'm not the only one this annoys. Did you leave the movie on? Cause that would've been really funny.

It just bothers me because I think of my house as the one place I don't have to deal with other people's crap, but I'm not even safe at home.

I just started talking about Jesus and mainstream biblical Christianity and they got confused and came back with one of their "supervisors", then when I confused their "supervisor" I never saw them again. 🙂

I honestly feel sorry for a lot of Mormons... they've been duped into thinking they're Christians. They have some the weirdest practices I've ever heard of. Undergarments, plays where Satan is Jesus' spiritual brother, secret handshake, etcetc...

Your soul silly. Now break out the blood pen and sign on the dotted line or I'll break your knuckles.

Tell them that they can have 10 minutes to tell you about their religion if they give you 10 minutes to talk about your religion. If they agree, use your 10 minutes to describe how the church of satan changed your life and influences all you come in contact to.

Interesting way to put it. ALthough when you think about it, to an non-believer of something, the believer always appears to have been duped...

just becaues they're weird doesn't mean they're not christian. they ARE christian, since they believe jesus christ is/was the son of god.

They are no more, or no less, irritating then any solicitor that rudely interrupts my day.

Rude salesperson: Hi, how are you today?
Me: Fine. I'm shooting every third solicitor today, and the second one just left.

That's pretty much the way I feel too. I wasn't intending to critisize their faith, just the fact that they interrupt me at home.

<What do the Mormons hope to gain by bothering me at home?!>

The fallacy is that the people knocking on your door hope to gain new members...the real reason that religions have their members go door to door is so they don't LOSE members. Attitudes tend to follow actions. By forcing their followers to go out and preach certain beliefs it actually enforces and strengthens the religious beliefs for those people who preach them!

So the entire excercise of going door to door and bugging you about their religion actually has nothing to do with you at all! It's all about strengthening the beliefs of those who bug you. Any fools they actually sign up are just a bonus...

Ha! We fooled you! We were actually undercover feds disguised at Mormons. We were checking out all the houses in your neighborhood as well as planting bugs to catch terrorists as well as just to invade on your privacy as much as possible. Your phones are all tapped, your internet now goes through our proxy...We 0WNZ J0oU!..

btw what was up with Rosie O'Donell in the french maid outfit serving you Sex on a beach?

You do realize I will have to kill you now don't you...Call my secretary to schedule a time that is good for both of us..555-1234 be seeing you..

muhahahaha

Seriously though...just act all freaky...look behind them and act like they might have been followed...Ask if Guido sent them...then say "Hurry behind the bushes" and dive behind the bushes and cover your head. Make a low mooing sound. Tell them it helps to keep the aliens away. Ask if they have any condoms so you can blow them up. Tell them that the monsters are afraid of the Holy Trojenz and will cower like little kitty cats...

😉

Well, if you're a evangelical, Protestant, Roman Catholic, or other flavor of accepted mainstream Christian, you wouldn't exactly agree with their full definition of the "son of God." Mormons don't believe in the complete equality and full divinity of Jesus. This is one of the basic foundations of the Christian church. This was even a problem in Paul's day... he preached against people that did not acknowledge this. That's just one of the major inconsistencies that classifies them as not truly Christian. And Jesus is not Satan's brother. These are among the many reasons why they aren't Christian. Not to mention the entire "Book of Mormon" is not a canonically accepted text by the church. I hope that helps you understand why many Christians view Mormons as a non-Christian... our basic tenets are different. Only the surface looks the same.

my friend keeps a satanic bible on the shelf near his door, and when religious solicitors come by, he asks them if they would like to talk about his religion. he is not a satanist, btw. But this apparently works!

One of the earliest Christian groups, the Carpocratians, held a eucharist with menstrual blood and semen :Q

I was a practicing Mormon for the first 17 years of my life and I have never heard anything about this stuff you're quoting.

Garments- Yes they wear special under-garments. Their purpose or significance is unknown to me as I bailed on the whole religion thing before I was indoctrinated into that phase.

heh thanks, but i already know why people think they're not christian. i just disagree. the definition of "christian" is not that you have to agree with the majority of other christian denominations. to me, the only requirement is that you accept jesus christ as the son of god.

and if you want my personal opinion, i think a lot of people call them non-christians to marginalize them because they disagree on some issues. even with the commonly accepted denominations, there are differing beliefs as to what makes a "christian".

<< I was a practicing Mormon for the first 17 years of my life and I have never heard anything about this stuff you're quoting. >>

Well, you could go back and ask... but since you did leave the whole religion thing soon afterward you probably never got to that stage like you said. Most Christians don't even know much about their own beliefs. From personal experience, I didn't know much at all about my own beliefs when I was 17. I'm still maturing and learning spiritually and hope to do so for a while.

In fact, I've found most people don't know much about their own spiritual beliefs even if they claim to be spiritual. A few Christians have become Mormons and left fairly quickly after they found out how heretical it really was once they got deeper into the religion and then came back and read the accepted Christian Bible. This is the reason why I scared those Mormon missionaries... I knew enough about my own beliefs to distinguish mine and theirs significantly.

I think only the Muslims tend to have a good grasp of their own religion and other religions as well... unfortunately usually for the purpose of attacking other people's beliefs. While it isn't always true, I tended to find that's what Muslim people I talked to did when we talked on the general subject of religion. I was interested in learning and understanding their beliefs, and sometimes they spent more time attacking mine. Enough on that tangent, I'm sure I opened up a can of worms there... 🙂
