What do piracy release groups get out of it?

i knew someone who was in very well known group back in the day releasing PSX games.

he was on the east coast and someone in the group would paypal him money so that he could go buy the game as soon as stores opened. he was on .edu so he could get it to their main sites really quick (this was back in 1999 before broadband was common in homes). he got to keep the game after he ripped it as well.

so to him, he was simply getting free games for uploading them. but whoever gave him the money must have spent a lot of money lol.

"The scene" is a very common term. It's not used just in the pirate circle.

I didn't say it was.

It's hard to articulate why I find this strange/funny. I think when you refer to a "scene" you're referring to something social, and there's always some modifier - i.e. the "club scene" or what have you. Referring to piracy groups as "the scene" seems to be an attempt to glamorize it, and the lack of a modifier seems kind of narcissistic.

So whenever a new game, movie or album is released or leaked the "release groups" fight to be the first to get the torrents and shit out. Why? What do these groups get out of it, aside from notoriety? Why even attach your group's name to something when all it could do is incriminate you at some stage? Are they somehow making money from this?

i wondered that myself. seems the same groups are working today as back when i was pirating crap in high school (woot 33.6 downloads! YEA!)

It's a subculture that has been around for about 30 years. It's about competition. If you ever were in the game, you'd get it. It has nothing to do with anything people in this thread suggested. The last thing they're doing it for is to give wankers easy access to warez on torrent sites.

It has been called the scene for a long time.

Where is that wimp.com video of biz philosophy and results that organizations that rewarded $$ to top performers shot down productivity, and amazingly when the companies decided to offer no reward, productivity shot up!

Modifier is redundant when we already have the context.
