I used nail polish remover..make sure it dries completely before you put the cpu back in since it's very flammable!

That's what I did...and my 700E is running OK so far. :)

just wait about 15-20 min before reapplying the thermal paste, etc...just to play it safe.

Nail polish remover is the way to go. 15-20 minutes is a little overkill, this stuff dries fast. My wife takes her nail polish off and repaints immdeiately:)

You guys are talking about flip chips right? I'm a little confused because Eric_D's original post says that he "removed the stock heatsink and fan" and the retail FC-PGA chips don't have the HSF mounted when they're shipped. Anyway, what kind of difference can you expect if you remove the pad and use thermal grease with the stock HSF.

i took off the heatsink/fan from an SECC2 retail 700e.

One more question, do i keep the little plate (about 1cm) on the chip?

Is this what the Alpha P3125 connects to with thermal grease?

Or do i remove this too, and attach the Alpha to the chip itself?

thanks guys

I think the little plate that you talking about IS the chip. The SECC2 is also a flip chip, all Coppermines are. The core is flipped upside down compared to the old Katmai chips so that the hot side faces the heatsink.
