What do I use to open a dvd my computer won't recognize?

We bought some dvds online and they play fine on our dvd player but for whatever reason, my computer doesn't "recognize" them. When I put them in the dvd drive and click on the drive icon, it says that I should insert a dvd as if there wasn't one there. Are there any programs which will force it to open?

Your drive is probably not a dvd drive or is broken.

or the bastards invented some new copy protection

Its definately a dvd drive and I'm pretty sure it works...and the dvds I'm copying are from China so I doubt theres any high tech copy protection going on...

edit: nothing seems to work, when I try to open the dvd in any program, windows spits back telling me to insert a disc
