What do I need to use gigabit LAN?

I have two computers connected in LAN. Our old router is very flakey and currently we are borrowing one to use as a replacement.

I am looking at a new Wireless N router with Gigabit LAN.

Do I need special cabling to use the Gigabit LAN?

Will it only work on the computer to computer transfers?

You need CAT5E cables. You can also keep using your current 10/100 router and just add a gigabit switch for $25-50.

What other types of transfers are you talking about? NAS? Media players?

Our old router is basically dead, it won't power up any more. The one we are using in meantime is not wireless so we need a new router regardless.

I don't have any other special devices hooked by wire that could take advantage of gigabit besides these 2 or 3 computers.

How can I determine what kind of cable I have? The runs are already all through the house so it may not be possible to check all the legs.

Anything 801.11n right now will probably be only the draft n-version.

I think you should get a Router that is suitable to your need as a Wireless Router. If it happen to have Giga ports fine.

Otherwise get a Good Giga switch and do not restrict your choice of a Router because of the Giga ports.

You can determine what the cable is by some labeling on it.

If you can get to some place where you can see it, you will see some printing on the cable it usually has a XXXXXXXX feet and CatX printed on it.

The beginning of your post is exactly what I plan on doing. Just wanted to know if there was anything else fancy required to use gigabit LAN.
