What do I need to upgrade to run the new Doom decent?

You should care if you like smooth gameplay. All those little annoying glitches and pauses in game play is what frametime variance is all about. I mean if your getting 40fps you have bigger problems, but once you get to a smooth rate it matters.

this is what i thought until i went wait... thats frame rate..

so why is the system hitting higher overall average frame rate with less ram, then with more ram... :\

If you compare the first and last graph, the first graph has a higher overall average frame rate, while the bottom graph has a smoother frame rate.

To me something about that test does not seem right, or its flawed in some case.

Or option C, you're reading the graph incorrectly ;)

The vertical axis measures frametime in ms, not framerate. So higher spikes means that each frame is taking longer to render and leading to pauses and stuttering.

As others have said: overclock your CPU as much as possible + 970 or higher depending on budget.

The more I think about it I think I'm just gonna wait till Black Friday to get a new video card, by then the prices will be down anyway plus the black Friday sales. I have too much else to do this summer to worry about getting tied into a bunch of games. If I wait till black Friday the weather will be crappy and it will give me something to do.
