What do I need to test a motherboard?

I fried a mobile barton in my NF7-S about 10 months ago. Apparently it didnt like 1.75v actual and sub 55C load temps. *shrugs* thats the risk I took. Now Im looking to make a PVR system for overnight recording. Ive discussed this topic a few times and I have all of the information I need for the system itself. Socket A is definately more pleasing to cool than the Slot 1 P3 that might be used and Soundstorm is a luxury which deserves to be abused given the oppurtunity so Im trying to figure out whether it works.

Apart from a PSU, what do I have to risk to see if this board works?

I have a 1700+ DLT3C in use in my own NF7-S Rev 2.0 and trying to find another one in retail channels and even on UK Ebay is difficult. Mobile Bartons are quite expensive still, £55 for the cheapest so they'd be a last resort. Any suggestions? Im not a fan of ebay/person-to-person sales but thats a route I may have to take.

Overall, my eBay experience has been positive. I have a lot of Scot in my background, so I don't keep on bidding until I overpay for something I could get cheaper at retail. I snipe at the last second with my best top bid, and if I miss, I try again in a next auction. I'll use the eBay "Compare" option to screen several auctions coming up in the next few hours, skip any that are PayPal Only, and any that expect to cover their costs with exorbitant flat rate shipping charges.

I bought a Duron that way for a Linux Firewall box for under $30 US, shipped. I paid a little more for an XP-M 1800 (neither have come yet -- both new buys). I've never had a system board with IGP, so I've never tested with less than a single DIMM, a VGA card, cpu, hsf, and psu, but I have breadboarded it all wide open outside of a case to see that all the parts were working together.

Thanks Kiwi....

Probably going to risk my dads Sempron 2400+ rather than my 1700+ DLT3C in the board. If the Sempron fries, its a lot easier to get a hold of a direct replacement.

If the board can pull it off, Ive spotted a decent XP-M to go for but I fear I'll be forced into a mobile barton.

Try the FS/FT forums here on Anandtech - I built my entire Socket A PVR system from there, just a month or two ago...

Trans Atlantic shipping costs are quite high and finding a seller willing to sell to a first-time purchaser would be even harder.

Thanks for the suggestion though.
