Use stock thermal paste if not overclocking much or at all. Get some RAM. Optical drive is handy. You will need to reinstall XP me thinks. Case is always nice. Need a power supply, I suggest a 330w or 380w Seasonic S12.

Oh, you do not NEED a wristband if you ground yourself a lot, but I always use one. $6.00 to prevent killing my parts? I'll take it.

Yeah, I'm re-using my 1.5gb of PC3200, SATA drives, DVDRW, case, PSU...everything but the original CPU/mobo. After selling the orignal mobo/CPU, the upgrade to the Opty/BioStar is only costing about a bill.

Do you really think I will need to reinstall XP?

I don't currently have a GPU. I was thinking of jumping to a $140 (rebate) 7900gs on my Compaq as it had a PCI-e x16 slot, but I think the dual core Opty is too good to pass by for the price (I use Premiere and do a fair bit of encoding). Plus, it's my last chance to utilize my pc3200 DDR RAM. Video cards constantly drop in price. I just noticed a 7600gt for $78 after rebate.

dont buy the biostar; get the Asus A8N-VM CSM for about $20 more -- I have the biostar and the asus and the asus is a much better board overall (onboard gigabit ethernet, 4 sata ports, slightly better onboard graphics card, dvi & dsub out built-in for dual-monitors w/o a discrete video card, better onboard audio, etc).

Good choice on the opty. You will definitely need to reinstall XP. No doubt about it whatsoever. I doubt it will boot, and even if it does, it's not going to work right. You might not even be able to get it to boot up in safe mode.

Yeah, that board definitely specs better. I would have to buy a 1394 PCI ($10) card as the Biostar is lacking that. The dual monitor output is nice, as I was looking forward to that for Premiere (I have a spare 17" CRT) when I was going to grab the 7900gs.

I know I should take the reviews on Newegg with a grain of salt, but I always read through them and over analyze.

Have you used the dual outputs?

Thanks for the reccommendation.

Does the Asus overclock very well? because I'm definitely looking to maximize the Opteron's performance.
