I didn't know I was supposed to. it didn't really seem on topic, plus questions like "what is your attitude going in?" are much too vague for me to bother with. I don't plan on studying the whole time, obviously. I'll probably enjoy myself the same way I do now. what else would you like to know?

how do I enjoy myself? I listen to music, surf, "chat," wander around stores, play guitar, drive, write, read, watch movies, learn about psychology, clean, sleep, think, go to the library, sit in public places and watch people, design websites, draw, etc.
I never said that I'm not bringing anything fun, but I don't need suggestions in that area.

A big study pillow can be great considering your bed will also probably double as your couch.
Bring a bunch of quarters for laundry. If either you or your roommate has a mini fridge, that would be a nice addition. What about music? Are you going to play CD's through your PC's speakers or do you have a small boom box? Find out if you will have communal (hall) or suite bathrooms. If the bathroom if for the whole hall, you'll need something to carry all your shampoo and stuff to and from the bathroom.
A plastic storage container or two can be great for all the misc stuff you will accumulate. They'll easilly go under your bed or stack nicely in your closet without taking up too much space.

mini-fridge and microwave = necessities, especially if you're going to school in the North East. if we got a big snowfall over the weekend, they usually wouldn't have all the roads/walking pathes fully shoveled and salted until the start of classes on Monday mornings. I had more than a few weekends where my roommate and I ended up trapped inside the dorms. Not that the cafeteria was closed, but who wants to walk half a mile through snow that reaches up to your knees just to eat shiatty cafeteria food? for those situations, frozen dinners, easy-mac, and ramen are your best friends.
also, don't overlook the shower situation. if you're uncomfortable walking from one side of the dorms to the other side in nothing but a towel, you might want to consider buying a nice, warm bathrobe. a shower caddy is also a must; there's just too much crap that you need to carry back and forth to the bathroom when you shower (soap, shampoo, conditioner, toothbrush/toothpaste, towel, etc). imagine you're walking down the hall coming back from the shower at 3 in the afternoon, both your arms filled with crap, and your towel drops in the middle of the hallway. not the most pleasant experience
quaters = a must. quaters are practically gold in college life. not only are they used for drinking games, but in most dorms, they're the only way to get laundry done (my dorm was $3/load... $1.50 for wash, and $1.50 for dry, payable with quaters only). speaking of laundry, figure out how often you plan on doing laundry, and bring the appropriate amount of clothes + towels.
or just be like me... I got lazy and didn't feel like doing laundry, so I just bought new clothes by senior year, I had enough clothes where I only had to do laundry every two months

depends. my college didn't... we had one change machine on campus, and it was in the sub-basement of the student union. the only reason I knew it existed was because we used to play D&D on the weekends in the sub-basement
as far as I knew, no one other than us D&D players even knew it was there. heh.it's something to keep on eye out for if you go to visit the campus. otherwise, bring the quaters just in case. worse case scenario, you have plenty of change for late night poker games and the vending machines.
You don't really need to bring all that much. Just make sure you have clothes, your toiletries, and your computer with you.

I wouldn't count on it and even if there is one, I highly recommend having your own emergency stash of quarters for when the change machine breaks. Chances are, the change machine will be owned by the dorm / student government and when they break it can take them a while to get it fixed.

just a random tip that some hot senior RA taught me freshman year...
if you put a dollar bill into some vending machines, they give you 4 quaters in change if you request to get your money back before buying anything just find the right machine, cause there's also the machines that refuse to give you your money back at all

have you eaten the cafeteria food at the school? all students here have to have a meal plan, but i never eat in the cafeteria. i make all microwavable stuff or i use my 'hot pot' similar to the one posted earlier on ebay.

This could be along shot, but you could try being outgoing and meet people and stuff. Maybe that would help the "not many" friends thing...
U of U is a wierd place, since it's a relatively fairly large university but the majority of the students commute and there are a lot of students who don't fit the 18-22 college student type. My parents live in SLC and I've taken a couple of classes there, plus I did an internship there last summer too.
