thirtythree,

it's good to be focused on your education (as it sounds like), but believe me, you'll learn more about yourself outside of class than inside of class; anyone who has ever gone to college will tell you this...

i'm not saying you need to have a fake id or condoms or whatever, just have an open mind to meeting new people instead of memorizing 300 pages of text a night...

but, to add to your checklist, i'd say a nice big duffle bag to take your dirty clothes to the washer/dryer, and i would consider getting a TV tuner card for your computer, and just not even worrying about taking a TV :)

thanks. I'm a teenager though so I'm certain that I know plenty about myself ;) I guess everyone has to learn the hard way.

Lawyer, so once you get nailed for downloading MP3's on your connection you can defend yourself. ;)

Seriously though - a couple fold-out chairs is nice or a large air circulator if you don't have A/C. The moving air is sufficiently cool enough to keep you from sweating like a hippo. Also, if they crank up the heat in the winter it helps to mitigate it.

*a couple of collapsable duffel bags (that can be wadded into a ball). Good for laundry and carrying crap around.
*flip-flops for the show (trust me, you want them)
*lots of garbage bags
*a small toolkit for working on other people's computers

Xbox! I never played my xbox before i got to college, but now there are about 30 on the network that play halo on Xbox every night. Fun stuff and keeps it clean. I would say Fake ID as well, i got mine taken away last semester and havent gotten a new one yet.
other than that just bring the normal stuff. I would recommend getting one of those featherbed thigns for your matress, i have loved mine this year. Bring a fan for sure, cuz your room might start smelling funky if you leave certain things around. Start saving quarters right now for your laundry. And if you already know the address of your room, start signing up for those free magazine subscriptions off of hot deals here at anandtech, it makes great reading material in the bathroom. A Tv is necessary and I cannot think of much else i have brought. Anyways, college is awesome, your gonna have a blast

I was actually thinking about posting a thread like this, but thought it was too early. Probably the most important thing I've heard from several people is to coordinate stuff with your roomate(s) if you have any so you dont end up with 2 of everything and can save some cash.

I found that I could make some pretty tasty meals with a hot pot (plastic "pot" with built-in heating element), toaster oven, and electric griddle. Hot pot was good for spaghetti (or Ramen if you like that sort of thing), toaster oven made some good garlic bread and just about anything else you can make in a tiny oven, and the griddle made french toast, bacon, etc. Add in my bread machine and I was always filling my dorm with pleasant smells, and I ate well.

thirtythree;

even if you are not going to be drinking, you should still get a fake id to get in clubs and everything. i have couple of non-drinking friends but they all got fake ids because the trend is allowing ladies over 18, and allowing guys over 21.

one of my best friends promised himself to not drink through college and he really didn't. i really admire his choice, he withstand all the pressue other people gave him, but he had as much fun as anyone else...

drinking may not be your thing, but clubs & bars are really cool to meet with new people ...

just my $0.02.

I'm not cooking my own food... I have to buy one of their "meal plans."

edit: oh, and thanks to everyone who has replied so far

As great as the meal plans sound (you don't have to cook your own food and you can eat whatever you want/whenever you want!), they get old real fast. You will soon loathe the fact that you have to eat on their schedule, and that they aren't open at midnight when you need some "brain" food. You'll despise the fact that as great as it is to have a variety of food in the caf., it will all basically taste the same after a while

if you think our suggestions of george foreman grill/hot pot express/electric griddle are a little too much, at least take

1) a 5lb. bag of sugar,
2) ~10 packets of your favorite kool-aid flavor
3) a pitcher for said kool-aid
4) one of the sam's club/bj's "mega pack" of peanut butter crackers (the austin brand is just as good as the "official" brand)
5) breakfast bars for when you don't feel like waking up 30 minutes early just to eat eggs/bacon/grits/hashbrowns/toast in the caf.

Most dorms probably won't let you have hot plates/foreman grilles/griddles. That's a big no-no here in the Texas dorms, and this includes coffee makers too. If your school is of any size you probably will be subject to similar fire code rules.

now let's see... you need a desklamp, towels, alarm clock, plenty of tissue, a water boiler, laundry baskets (two pop-up type), boxes of tissue, brita filter and instant Lipton Ice tea, ummm....

thirtythree,
you've got a lot to learn about college my boy. What is your attitude going in? Please elaborate. Do you plan on studying the whole time, and that being your fun? How DO you intend to enjoy yourself? There is something you don't seem to be understanding, and it is a very important thing to know. You will learn as much outside the classroom in college as you do in. I don't mean about subject material, I mean about yourself and life. You might think that you know life and you are independant now, and all that, and I can tell you that you do not. I am in my sophmore year, and I have grown enormously in my first two years at school. You gotta have fun....go out, party(you don't have to drink), meet girls, meet new friends, whatever. If you don't, you will be kicking yourself, because you will not be truly experiencing and learning all that college has to offer.

You didn't respond to my statement.
