What do I do with my expired passport?

My passport expires today and I'm not sure if I'm supposed to destroy it, keep it, or turn it in to the government.

Any experience here?

I've still got mine from when I was 9 months old, and the one I got when I was 12-13 or so. I don't believe there's any holes punched in them or anything. They're buried in a box of crap in my basement.

...or, perhaps, being an American, you don't feel like visiting other countries? I read someplace that 80 percent of U.S. people never go outside their borders at all.

Additionally, if for some reason you can't renew it, but you need to apply for a new one...

if for example you got this one before you were 16 and are now over 18(one of the rules is something like that)...

you better have it to turn in as you apply for the new one. They will make life difficult for you if you don't have the old one.(or they can at least, and have for some people I know)

Or, perhaps, we can't drive for an hour and cross three countries.



I don't want to take two days of solid driving just to get to another country..and I can't afford to take vacations anyway.
