What do I do with a stack of old hardware.

We're talking like, 8MB RAM modules here. What should I do with them? I'm starting volunteering at a local non-profit that refurbishes computers for underpriviledged children, and we get a lot of donated systems that don't meet specs.

Take them to a recycler. There's a company in california that recovers gold from PCB boards, etc.

If it's small, trash. Otherwise I know the local office depot offers a program where you purchase a box, anywhere from $25-40 that you fill with any sort of computer goods. Return the box and you get some amount of store credit, and dispose of your trash. It ends up being like $9 to recycle a huge box of stuff.

From what I hear, the dumpster is occasionally overflowing. It's an option, but not a good one.

Try FS/FT forum first ("free for shipping" ?), to see if anyone is building a retro box for DOS and Win95.

Make some retro-geezer happy and keep the parts in use :)

Also, consider a "WTB for shipping or donate" if you find they lack something specific like PC66 - PC100 - PC133 SDRAM, small hard drives, etc. since a lot of people here have parts gathering dust that are several steps above 8MB modules.

You could ask the non-profit to set aside $50-100 to cover shipping to be able to make more and better systems for the kids.

Or on the flip side if you are feeling adventurous and destructive you could go Office Space on those old parts. Remember to play gangsta rap and have a louisville slugger on hand :p

Or likes other suggested see if any geezer is collecting

A lot of municipalities have recycling depots where this stuff can be taken - free. What's the recycling situation where you live?

I second the recycling option. None of it ends up in a landfill and you might be able to claim it as a tax deduction.

Not a great idea throwing the toxic crap @ regular dumpsters. Better give it to the "professionals"

I would say to forget about that stuff for a few years and eventually it will have worth to future geeks who want to restore a factory old piece of crap to functionality. :p

You should consider contributing those to the freebies thread in FS/FT. I know some people in there who could use that kind of stuff, and if you give away stuff, they'll be happy to give you stuff later in the future that you may need.

Throw them out. You don't need to keep *everything* just because it used to be useful. Do you keep your old tires when you get them replaced?

Donate them to your local school. Let kids practice installing CPUs and RAM where it does not matter if they snap one in half. Write off on your taxes.

Presumably this IS our dumpster, just for electronics.

Like I said, there's a lot of junk.

That's a good idea, but we don't have matched systems. Just random components.

Even better; that'll teach those "h4x0rz w4nn4b3z" the importance of having properly matched parts :D

If anyone in this thread is still interested or cares to get rid of any of their old crap, PM me. At the very least, we can make sure it's recycled properly (and you can have a shiny tax writeoff). Only thing we won't take are non-wyse terminal screens (we'll take those, too, if you give us a $15 cash donation to handle the ridiculous cost of getting rid of the fvckers). Otherwise, if it exists, we'll take it. It helps finance our refurbishment program, which benefits non-profit organizations, churches, and schools.

We're located in York, PA, and word on the street is that if you have something that will fill a box truck and are semi-local, we can come get it from you.
