what do i do? i have a customer claiming i stole a check!!!

so about a week ago i did a format/reinstall on a laptop for a customer, we'll call him Jerry. So anyway today i get a call from a local grocery store, where i cashed his payment check, which was for the amount of $85, it was $65 for one hour of labor, and $20 for pickup and delivery, i have the invoice, as does he. Anyway the grocery store is saying that he reported that check (along with others) as stolen. I explained to them that it was a business call, i've cashed checks with them many times before (sometimes i'll do that if i need quick cash on hand it's just more convenient than to go across town to the bank and cash it. anyway what is the next step i should take?
 
What an asshole. If the payment bounced, you could take him to small claims court for failure to pay... or something. Maybe go apeshit and take a baseball bat to him like you did to that guy in the walmart parking lot.
 
Probable lost his check book and had the bank stop ALL checks.

Just contcat him and make sure you charge him any fees you are charged.

wait...so you cashed it at the grocery store? is this the kind of habit one gets into in the coke/meth/smack/pharm-slinging business?
 
Zane, I had a customer like this, a very nice elderly man who I didn't know suffered from Alzheimer's disease. The best I can tell you is to contact the local police department immediately, show them your invoice and you might want to give them a good description of his notebook as well, as that will prove reasonably well that you worked on it for him. Being pre-emptive about this by contacting your local LE will be a big boost. Check crime is punished pretty hard here in Texas, and you don't want to let this spin out of control.

There are various factors that will work in your favor :

(1)- Voluntarily contacting the police immediately to report the situation.
(2)- The fact that the check is of a small amount, what kind of idiot would steal a check and then only try to get $85 out of it, lol.
(3)- The fact that you have an invoice (I recommend getting customers to sign them in the future, or to sign a 'order slip' describing desired work/parts) for the amount in question.
(4)- The fact that you can give an accurate and detailed description of his notebook, and the work done to it.

Don't wait any longer, contact the police right now.

Nothing wrong with cashing a check at the grocery store if it's convenient.

Except that the police are going to be insta-wary when zj approaches them with an issue like this. Not saying he's in the wrong here, but zj seems to have accumulated a decent history with LE.

i used to do collections for a few small businesses back in my younger days. id show up at their work or houses, watch a bit to make sure they were there and commence to collecting. the ones that ran were the most fun. i always had a police report to back up my claims too, never had a problem at all.

yeah, i was thinking that too, but i've never had any type of theft, or anything like that in my record, i've had a couple of posession charges a couple of years ago, and some traffic violations... but then again this is a small town and im not exactly "liked" by the law here... but that does seem like the best thing to do, im going to call them up and just explain the situation.

If you owe all the local banks money for bouncing checks yourself, sometimes the only option you have is the grocery store.
