what do chicken eat for food?

Chickens are the lowest on the food chain. They eat other chickens.
Pigs eat chickens, and cows eat pigs.

If you'd really like, I can go out to the barn and grab a label from the chicken feed...
In addition to what's mentioned above, some food has extra calcium and minerals added for the benefit of egg layers.

pretty much everthing including grinded up old chickens. (those that can't lay eggs anymore.

Chickens are also fed to cows and other animals.

likewise cows are sometimes fed older cows(who can't produce milk anymore) too. Doubles the beef. 🙂

I didn't think that was legal anymore (in the US anyway) due to mad cow disease... or is it that the feed simply can't contain part of the spinal column? I forget.

Chickens will eat anything and any kind of excrement including their own. A rancher friend of mine won't eat chicken because of this.

Beats me.. they won't eat the excrement of:
alpacas
llamas
goats
rabbits
dogs
pigs

and, as far as I know, their own. At least never that I've noticed, and I'm out there all the time watching them.
