What do burn marks on a proc. look like?

I am not sure if I have a "burned" processor, or if its just discoloration due to the manufacturing process. i have an Athlon 2200+, and I guess I will call the color of the chip light brown - the middle, underneath the core is a little darker - closer to regular brown, and kind of shaped like the core... is this indicative of burns?

The best way ive foudn to tell is to smell it. In my experiance you can tell right away if its dead from the rank smell it gives off. Granted this is only me, and I could be wrong..

Another vote for smelling it, my old 1.2 athlon was fried but showed nothing wrong but it sure smelled a bit funny...hehe, never use a shim unless needed!!!

which most often is not needed :D

i agree on smelling it, if you have ever burned anything electrical, the smell should be somewhat similar and familiar...

otherwise try it in a motherboard?

So, basically I should just wait and power it up and take a whif... and I shouldn't worry about brown marks on the cpu? Sounds good i guess... but I still want to know what burn marks LOOK like if they do at all.

CPUs often get nasty looking brown burn marks even when they are running just fine. The cooling could be better in such an instance, but it doesn't mean it's gone. One more (maybe final?) vote for smelling it. You don't need to try running it.

Yes, I'd go for smelling it too.

You see, the blue smoke they stuff into these things really stinks, so as soon as the chip is damaged, when the blue smoke comes out, the smell hangs around. And you'll never manage to get the blue smoke back in, not even taping over with duct tape, so you may as well toss the thing in the bucket.

All electrical appliances run on smoke... If you let the smoke out it never works again.
