There are about 40 different British accents and only the posh southern one sounds wussy. Pitch of voice is obviously based on the individual in question. Have you never seen a British film? What about Snatch? Or Bond? Does Sean Connery sound like a bitch to you?

Are you really this stupid? Sean Connery is Scottish. Are the English that hard up for big names that they steal from other countries? Fuck man, go with Michael Cain next time.

I could never stand the British accent. Seems many words' pronunciations are round-about ways to say things. Since they came first though, I'm sure the reason is that we simplified... and that's a good thing.

I'll add that the only female with a British accent I like is Ms. Beckinsale. In contrast, someone else who comes to mind right away... Vicki from Fifth Gear. It's too vulgar sounding coming from her... so there is a difference.

its not always true that we simplified, sometimes american spellings and speech is closer to how it was when the language made the trip over the ocean.

as for vicki butler..there are different regional accents, not all are pretty.

Not sure how true this is but I once heard the west coast includes the largest single group of language speakers with no real difference in dialects.

The only west coast accent I've really noticed is the surfer dude kind. But they say pop instead of soda so that's just plain weird 🙂

No, we don't. Only midwesterners say pop, and we think they're hicks too...

The United Kingdom of Great BRITAIN.

"British" != "English"

So I ask you: Are you really that stupid? Great Britain is the whole island. In fact, the "British Isles" also includes Ireland, so stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

If gorcorps is willing to nitpick the difference between England and Scotland, then I am willing to prove him wrong.🙂

We were talking about accents here, not just location. Scottish accents are very different than England accents and I was just making the point you can't lump Connery with Tony Blair and call it a day.

People in Cali don't have accents, we don't say pezzer for pizza like dudes from Boston for pizza. At worst we have some words exclusive to here, like hella and yadanahmean, But even those aren't very wildly used. I don't find people from Colorado or Arizona to have an accent either. Boston, Chicago, NY/NJ and most of the down south I might need a translator though.

Everyone has an "accent", but I don't understand how pronouncing words like they are supposed to be pronounced would be "weird" to anyone. 😕

well a person from Boston would find me being from California and pronouncing the words spot on how they should be weird. Because they seem to leave r's out of words that have them, and add them needlessly to words that don't have them. I would chose somebody from California if I was making a talking dictionary DVD or something because everywhere else people pretty much fucks up words.

How can anyone say they don't have an accent? It's fricking ridiculous to even suggest it. Of course you have one. You're just accustomed to it because you're around people who sound the same. Do you think Scottish people walk around Scotland saying "ooh, I love your Scottish accent". Of course not, they don't even notice. Same for you.

Go overseas and people will pick you for an American right away. Within 5 seconds of speaking.

I have a chameleon accent. If I am immersed in an area with an accent, I'll start talking like that in a matter of days.
I'm also good at pinpointing people's hometown because of that.
I met someone the other day and was perplexed by the way she spoke. Someone asked where she was from, and I offered to take a guess. I said she was born in Australia and went to Africa (slight white-African inflections), and then to England (London would be my guess). She was then really confused on how I guessed that.
It's hard to guess specific British accents, because (at least to me), they are not only broken up by region, but also by society class.

Someday I'll just have to go there to try and figure that out.

If you are making a post about how "there are 40 different British accents", then listing several disparate examples to prove your point (and show that most of them aren't "wussy"), this hardly qualifies as "lumping them all together and calling it a day". Just concede that you were wrong and move on.

Ok, I should rephrase what I said, while Californians do have an accent we speak American English the way it's supposed to be spoken. If I go to Scotland they'll know I'm an American, but I have no doubt they wouldn't be able to pinpoint where. Now send a New Yorker over and I would have little doubt the Scott would know instantly where they were from.

Jesus fucking christ I'm sorry I put ENGLISH instead of BRITISH. My point still stands that Scottish accents and English accents are too different to stick them in the same category. Fuck you and your ego, it can stroke itself.

Do you know where Tony Blair was born? (Hint: It's the same city as Sean Connery).

True, but from what I've heard and read Connery spent most of his childhood in Scottland whereas the Blair family left pretty early in Tony's life. So they may be born in the same place but when you learn to talk in different countries your accent changes.

Americas love for the British accent has gotten to the point of being flat out annoying with it's over-the-top pretentiousness. Americans believe something to be more agreeable if someone with a British accent says it. Take the very same thing said by someone with an American accent and you automatically lose your edge. You see it all the time now in commercials over the radio and on TV. I can't even stand to listen to NPR anymore. I used to love listening to it on my drive in and from work for the past 6 years or so. Now it's as if they can't talk about an issue without "the guy with the British accent". Make it stop!
