OK, it's a bit juvenile and disgusting, but bear with me... does anyone ever wonder what boogers smell like?
I mean, they are already in your nose, which means that everything you smell has already had the "booger smell" mixed in with it. So would that also mean when you smell "nothing", that's really just a baseline for what your boogers smell like. Is it even possible to truly smell nothing, the absence of all particles whatsoever?
Discuss.
