What do boatbuilders use to get that Ultra Glossy look on wood?

I've seen pictures of yatchs and other boats with super-nice looking glossy wood finishes...how do they get the wood to look like it's under clear plastic? I only have experience with staining but I want to do some super glossy finishes to get that really "wet" look. What do they use? I'm only familiar with clearcoat on the paint side of things :)

That or polyurethane would be my guess as well, although poly would probably be too thick.

Well, first you get enough seamen to cover the entire deck...

with varnish.

I read the thread title as What do bodybuilders use to get that Ultra Glossy look on wood? I had to do a double take as gloss and wood and bodybuilder just don't mix properly.

Well like inside the quarters. Plush fabrics and super duper glossy wood etc.

All you guys are wrong. It's the overbrushed clear nail polish from the masses of supermodels that every yacht owner gets.

That leaves me wondering what they used on my Mom's 43' Pan Oceanic.

i like interlux goldspar varnish for interior work and sikkens for exterior ( much more durable and uv resistant). usually satin finish for inside work and gloss for outside. best method to apply it is with a really nice, clean, 100% china hair brisittle brush. do not skimp on the brush! It will take many thin coats, light sanding between each and a last coat that, when applied correctly, flows like water on a sheet of glass.

Can it be sprayed or would that be too toxic? I can do airbrush or paint gun.

yes, varnish can be sprayed, and in most home building with real woodwork it is sprayed before the walls are painted, most stuff like doors and flooring that are pre-finished are sprayed also. i don't know how well it would work for something that is already installed though. seems like it would be more work to cover everything and spray than to just use a brush.

I'll be working with veneers. I'm getting more into woodworking projects, especially DIY speakers, and would like to get that ultra gloss look on some of them.

well an exterior yacht finish probably won't be the best for your interior work.

I would post up on something like avsforum or klipsch's where a lot of guys do reveneering and finishing.
