what distro of redhat should i use?

redhat 7.2?

or 7.3?

this is for my car computer. i have an o-rielly book on redhat, and with it are the 2 cd's for redhat 7.2.

i would need to download 7.3.



this is for giantdisc, and it's a linux server running almost nothing other than linux and mp3 playing. well, it also runs a network, when i want it to. anyway, what distribution should i use? i'm also gonna have to transfer files to it via the network, because after i get the OS installed, it wont have a cd drive.
 
well if it's just for mp3 playing then 7.2 should be fine since you already have discs.

however, if you want to upgrade, why get 7.3 instead of 9? 😕

boot time. i want it as early as possible to save on boot time.

Stable Woody is a Debian release. Why they give them such stupid and meaningless names I'll never understand, but it's just another distro.

RH 7.2 should be fine.
 
What programs are you going to use? Do they come with the disks you have? I am not much on Linux, but if you have to download the programs they might be compiled using different stuff or might need different other programs to meet dependancy needs. I really don't know much about it, but it came to mind when I read your question.
 
Car computer, hmm? Are we talking funky form factor with 802.11g support and a big-ass HD, running samba and sshd, hooked up to the deck? That'd be pretty darn cool... How about some more details on the setup?

If I'm understanding your broken english correctly, you want to know why someone would do this? I imagine it would be that the car's PC would have a large HD, and the mp3 collection and player could be updated via ftp or smb as needed, say if the player were updated to support some new format, or you just wanted to add music or modify the playlist. You'd want sshd so you could ssh in from your home PC to make configuration changes, also as needed.

Use the latest version. If you want it to boot faster, don't isntall X and a webserver, and all kinds of networking crap, etc...

I know, but it makes no sense. If I say Woody and Potato to people, that has no meaning. If I give their version numbers, they know which came first and which came later.
