What digital cameras are like the Canon S500, but better?

Things that bug me about the S500:

- relatively small field of view when fully zoomed out
- no manual shutter speed adjustment

Everything else is really good as far as I'm concerned. Any better alternatives?

try Digital Review to find a camera that is more suitable for you.

They also have a forum for enthusiasts in photography there who would most likely provide you with very good answers.

From that site it appears the only newer ultra-compact camera that has shutter priority is the Casio Exilim. Is the ultra-compact market really that sparse?

Do you really need a compact?

If you really need to stick with those types of cams then try out the usual digicam sites:

dpreview.com
dcresource.com
....

I particularly like those two. Check out the s500 review and then scroll down to the bottom and see what other cams are in the same class and check out their reviews too.

Personally, i'm ready to drop a little bit more money for the Canon S2 IS coming up in the next month or less. That's the camera that's going to rock the casbah.

That's what I'm trying to figure out--do I need a compact? My current camera isn't a compact and I've gotten along just fine with it. Two of my friends have the S410/S500 though, and I like the idea of being able to comfortably carry my camera in my pocket. I also like the fact that the ultra-compacts use a rechargeable lithium ion battery as opposed to the AAs in the S2 IS. I really like the 10x zoom on the S2 IS though.
