I'm a big fan of the Canon PowerShot series. I bought my 3.2mp A75 when it was $199. The A-Series is awesome:

I would recommend the following for any camera you get:
-Digital camera
-BIG memory card
-1 or 2 spare batteries
-Screen protector for LCD
-Bag or carrying case (Tamrac makes nice ones with room for spare batteries and cards, plus has a shoulder strap)
In addition to that, I would also suggest getting a spare charger. I leave one at home and one in my travel bag, so if I go somewhere and need battery juice I don't have to worry about messing up my home charging setup. You can get spare batteries and chargers (OEM or aftermarket) for mega-cheap on ebay. You may also want to get a spare memory card, just as backup. You can get an 8-gig SD or CF card for well under $100, which will typically give you capacity in the 1,000-picture range.
