I have nothing against canon but they are by all means not a god in the camera industry. There is plenty of competition out there and each manufacturuer has a target audience that differs by some degree. I would suggest going to a forum or reviews that are both canon biased (such as this one) and sony biased and take from them each and make your decision.

Bad advice. If you want to compare go to a fairly unbiased site like DPReview.com and compare them. I think there are enough valid arguments against the Sony presented in this thread though.

Personally, I like Canon but when I was shopping for camcorders a few years ago I went with a Sony because I did my homework and chose the best camcorder for my money. At the time that was the Sony.

I've purchased 6 different cameras, 2 flash units, a number of lenses and various other accessories over the past 10 years and all of them were Canon (with the exception of one lens which I don't own anymore).

To each his own, and I dont think by ANY means that dpreview is unbiased! Not many places out there are unbiased and there are lots of half truths out there that people swear by on both ends. Best thing to do is compare pictures with both cameras and determine whats best for you. My experience is that Canon's compacts suck at high ISO, Sony's are typically superior in that aspect but then you have a bit better detail in comparison with the Canon's in my experience as well so its a trade off. Everyone has their own needs so its hard to recommend a camera for someone that you dont know what their needs and wants are in a camera.
