What digital camera should I get?

I'm deciding between these two digital cameras right now for a small camera. I like how the Sony one has a better batter life. But the Canon seems to be in a higher class. They are both around $200 at Newegg.

What do you recommend? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

I'd go with the Canon simply because I already have an SD600 and it is great. Takes great pics and the battery life is very good.

Canon, because I have no experience whatsoever with the Sony. :p My mother has an SD1000 from her employer..

One of my clients got Canon SD1000 last month. It was nice, took decent pics. I didn't realized how small the camera really was <about the size of a cards deck>.

I used to have Canon A40 for about 3 years and I liked it.

Canon. I  my Canon SD550. And it takes SD memory, not that MemoryStick trash. ;)

i have the sony w80, and i love it! i was originally gonna go get the sd1000 but after looking at it at the store and comparing it with the w80, we decided that the w80 was better. i suggest you look into that, it's ~$220 at amazon.

i was really a canon fanboy and i didn't want to get this camera. we did side by side tests of the cameras (just viewing pictures on the view screens) and decided on the sony... i have had bad past experiences with sony, but it really is a great camera

wouldn't viewing pictures on the viewscreen just dictate which camera had the better screen? :p

I have a the SD1000 and I love it. I can have it with me whenever and not really be imposed by its size. I don't know anything about the w80 so I wouldn't recommend it over it, but I do like and recommend the SD1000 as a camera not compared to a product i'm not familiar with.

I just bought a Canon SD1000, mainly for my wife to use and for theme parks where we don't want to lug around my Canon 30D. We carried it around all day at Sea World on Saturday and had no trouble with battery life. It is obviously limited by its short zoom lens and lack of manual control but it was cheap and it takes very good pictures. We wanted something tiny that was easy to use and this camera meets those needs quite well.

It's a great little camera. I'd highly recommend it.

GF's got a W35, and it seems fine for what it is, a very compact P&S.

I can't stand the moronic attitude prevalent around here that automatically writes off any Sony product, in this case quite clearly without having the slightest how either camera stacks up :p

That said, I've read some very solid reviews of this Canon compact, and know nothing about the Sony, so on that basis, I would recommend the SD1000 ;)

I have the SD1000 and love it. One thing I really like about it is that it supports SDHC memory cards...I have an 8GB SD card in mine. I can record well over an hour of 640x480 video or take about 5000 shots on the highest quality/resolution settings with that.

at dpreview.com, they can do a side-by-side comparison of the two cameras

Here are some things I noticed in favor of each:

Canon SD1000
Higher ISO range (although iso1600 on an ultra compact is practically useless for nice pics)
More focus points (9 vs 5)
Longer minimum shutter speed (for those long shutter pics)
Faster continuous shooting (1.7fps vs 1.1fps)
Records more frames/sec in video mode (60fps vs 30fps)
2x more pixels on LCD display
A tiny bit smaller

Sony W55
Rated 4.5/5 stars (vs 4/5)
Slightly cheaper
Closer macro focus range (2cm vs 5cm)
Slightly faster shutter speed (1/1500 vs 1/1000)
Lighter by 1oz (30g)

Aside from a couple of those points, I'd say these cameras are practically the same thing. Personally, I love shooting long shutter photos, so that reason would be enough for me to get the canon (which I voted for). If you're into macro, then I would suggest the sony, because it lets you get closer to your subject.

Thanks for the help...

It seems like Newegg has a great deal on the Canon for only $215 and it includes the 1 gig flash card.

I bought mine from B&H Photo with a 2GB flash card and a USB card reader for $249.

The 870IS isn't much different from the 850IS, my new favorite. They're both Elphs and very compact.

$200 is a pretty low price point. You get what you pay for. :D

EDIT: Dug, the reason I hate Sony is the proprietary Memory Stick BS. They're not as easy to come by, cost more, and can't be read/used by nearly as many intermediate devices as SD can.

Just make sure you know that most people here are biased toward canon so I would take what alot of what people say here with a grain of salt IMHO. I have nothing against canon but they are by all means not a god in the camera industry. There is plenty of competition out there and each manufacturuer has a target audience that differs by some degree. I would suggest going to a forum or reviews that are both canon biased (such as this one) and sony biased and take from them each and make your decision.
