what digital camera should I buy?

I've never owned a digital camera before and I figure it's about time I get one. So I really don't know where to look. I don't really have a price range, but probably no more than $400 or $500. I looked on Pricegrabber.com under digital cameras and the highest recommended camera is the Canon S2 IS for $316.95. All the reviews sound really great, but I don't really know how to compare it with other cameras. Does anyone have this camera or could you recommend another one?

As been mentioned many, many times in this forum.. tough to go wrong with a Canon or Sony. Heck, most main line mfgs are all good. Little things like LCD size and video capability made the Sony DSCW5 my choice (640x480@30FPS in MPG) but that's me.

I can't stand quicktime that seems to be getting quite common with some makers.
