I'm going on a trip real soon and want to get a nice digital camera, but I'm a college student...thus I'm broke. Since I have tons of credit and a solid job, what should I get that's good and cheap? I would be happy with a 2MP camera, but am looking for something with some decent optical zoom if possible. I don't want all the pictures to look distorted from that digital crap. I would post this in the wanted thread, but I am really wanting to see some discussion of the best camera for the money right now. Feel free to PM me any current deals you know of. They'd be well appreciated. :)

Ohh yeah, I'll be sure to post pictures of Salt Lake City and any ski slopes I might see as well as Novell's Brainshare 2003 and Huey Lewis and the News. :D

A FujiFilm 2650 (2m, 3x optical) or the FujiFilm 2800 (2m, 6x optical), Gateway sells the 2800 on their site for $299, and I think it's an awesome camera :D

Get the Canon S230 if you are thinking about size. I love mine fits perfectly in my pocket

Thanks for all your responses.... My price range is $250-300...I would consider spending more if it was worth it. :p

canon a40 is currently the bestbuy right now for its price and features.

But if you want compactness, look into canon's elph line and the olympus d50

I saw a Canon S-200 at Staples the other day on clearance for $209, less a coupon you are looking at $180 + tax out the door.

***Of course YMMV, as with any Staples clearance items.***

Good decision. The Canon will blow the Kodak away when it comes to pictures. I took a lot of comparision shots between a Kodak DC-3600 (??) and my Canon G2. The Canon is unbelievable. Granted, the Canon was about 3 times more in price ... but, well worth it.

Why is everyone here such a huge fan of the Cannon S200/230? They aren't bad cameras, but for the price, you can get better.

I'm pretty happy with my nikon cp 2500, although its lack of manual controls is irritating to me.

1) If you can find it in stock (discontinued) I would buy the Canon PowerShot A40.

2) If you can find it in stock and on clearance, Staples B&M has the Canon PowerShot S200 for anywhere from $170 - $230.

3) Another solid recommendation is the Fuji Finepix 2650 (but it uses xD instead of CF media).

Any of the above 3 should be more than adequate for your digicam needs.

I just bought my wife a Nikon Coolpix 2100 for our 32nd wedding anniversary.

It's a 2.1 Megapixel camera with and all glass Nikor 7 stage coated lens, 3X OPTICAL zoom, 14 scene modes, 15 second movie mode without sound, macro mode for shots as close as 1.6 inches, both macro and normal mode are good to infinity so you don't need to change modes to shoot different pix, one button upload via USB 1.1, 1.5 inch LCD and viewfinder, uses Nimh rechargable batteries OR 2 AA (if you run out of juice you can just pick up a couple AA's to keep shooting until you recharge), Compact Flash card - the most flexible media AFAIK.

This camera is in the "point and shoot" class but has many features of higher priced cameras and the pix are EXCELLENT!

The Nikon software that's included is about all you'll need to edit, email, print - you name it. Also comes with a battery pack for one time use, strap, USB and cable to connect to your TV via RCA jacks and a video explaining the features and use as well as a complete manual.

I did a LOT of research on 2.1 Megapixel cameras. Let me save you the time. Get this camera.

It's also small enough to fit in a shirt pocket. I found mine online for $220 shipping included at Page Computer.

They're tiny, reliable, and perform well. Plus they're purty.

Not to brag, but I've been eyeballing the Olympus C-4000 for a few weeks now and It appeared in my Goldbox the other day and I bought it. came to $340.
