What digi-camera should I get?

My sister wants to get a digital camera. She wants it to be able to zoom, and cost $300 or less.
Right now I'm stuck between the Canon ELF and Sony DSC-P10 family of cameras. But I figured I should ask the pro's.... YOU GUYS! Anyway, any feedback would be much appreciated, by both me and my sister.

i recommend certain brands for one thing

Canon
Fuji
Panasonic

I have a Canon S230 and I love it.. I think the digital Elph cameras rule!

the other brands have some great stuff also! (I ALMOST bought a Panasonic digicam)

I have a Canon A80 on the way to replace my trusty A50. If you want tiny, the ELF is the way to go. Chaeck out the Canon SD100.

The Canon A70 has a buttload of great reviews, both from professionals and from the point and shoot crowd. It fits perfectly into your budget (and even better if you find a coupon for OMax or someplace) The A80 is nice too, but not enuf nicer to warrant $100 extra you will pay.

A80 has a few nice advantages over A70

4.0 Vs 3.2 MP
Slightly longer optical zoom (114mm Vs 105mm)
Aluminum Vs plastic body
270 degree LCD swivel. Can also be turned facing in for protection.
9 point AF VS 5 point AF of the A70
Better user controls. "Custom 1 and Custom 2" settings on the thumb wheel for quick access to stored settings.

It also loses at least one very important feature...the ability to record 640x480 minimovies...again...nothing there I personally would fork over another $100 for.

For me, I could care less about movies. That is what my DV camcorder is for. Camcorder for movies. Still camera for still pictures. I hate the useless features like cr@ppy stills on a camcorder and even cr@ppier movies on a still camera. I'd be happier if it didn't have the movie feature at all. You will note the Canon G3 also has the small movie size. That is because the A80 and the G3 use the same 1/1.8 inch 4.1 MP CCD.

I looked long and hard at the A70 and A80. For me, the extra features and quality of the A80 are well worth the extra price. To some, the tiny sizeof the Elph series is worth the extra $$. Others dont think a Canon is worth the extra cost over a Fuji/Kodak/Olympus level camera. To each his own.

I agree on that, whats the point in such a low quality movie (pic for camcorders) ? its impossible to watch (look at)

by the way oldfart is the a80 very close to the g3 ? I did lots of research on the g3 and wanted to buy it but it was too expensive for me so I waited for it to go down in price but instead they just dropped it 🙂

Thanks
Dan

I guess the movie clip thing is kind of cool in a way and is cheap to put in a camera like a still frame can be easily done in a camcorder. I'll never use either but some people might. It certainly is a minor feature and not one I would use to base a decision on.

I felt the same way on the G3. VERY nice camera, but more than I wanted to spend. It also is a little big for what I wanted. I dont need the shirt pocket "tiny" like an ELPH (although I do like them!) , but wanted it to be small. The A60/70/80 size is decent.

s230 or above. a small camera you can carry easily is better then a camera u leave at home cuz its big and a pain to carry.
more megapixels the better as always.

Wow thank you very much, I think my sister decided on the A80. Kind of funny since it wasn't even on the list before you guys started raving about it. It looks like Canon is the ASUS of camera's. Your help is much appreciated. Just wondering, how come no one voted for the Sony DSC camera family? Are they not as high of quality?

P.S. for all you ELPH lovers that replied, I think I'm getting an ELPH, I don't carry a purse around with me like my sister. So size wins above all else.

Again thank you for all of your advice.

That is a good point, and a good enough reason to go canon even if its for loyalty purposes alone. I was just curious if canon uses better parts or something. In the audio industry, I cannot tell you how many brand names that are very well respected among the average person use junk for parts. Some companies hide the junk by using lower quality capacitors and transistors, and one company even blatantly slaps the audio-ignorant in the face by using Styrofoam based suspension (instead of n-butyl rubber) and paper cones and even paper tweeters! (Just to let you know paper distorts at a lower frequency than almost any other speaker material and should only be used in things like guitar speaker cabinets and such).
It just stuck me very odd that no one picked sony, and I was wondering how much there was to this. Then again ASUS tends to have a somewhat similar diehard fanbase with their A7N8X deluxe and there is nothing wrong with many of the other mobos out there for the K7 chipset. Just found it curious thats all.

Take care,
wacki

Another good thing about the Canon A70/80 is the attachments that you can get for these models,Canon 0.7x wide angle lense,Canon TC-DC52A Powershot A80 1.75x teleconverter , DC52D adapter, Canon WP-DC900 Waterproof case etc.

If you want to buy online, Buydig.com has the A80 for $350 free shipping. You will want to get some rechargeable AA's for it and a bigger compact flash card. Get that elsewhere.

For the ELPH, Officemax has a good deal on the SD100. They throw in a 128M SD card and an extra battery for $300. There may be OM coupons around that would lower the price some more. More info here Deal ends today

Couple of good sites:

I just picked up the A80 on Thursday. This is my 1st digital camera, but I did about a weeks worth of reading (reviews, forums). All point to Canon. I picked the A80 because it can be used as a simple "point and shoot", but if/when u learn more, there are some manual controls.
I've found a few sites based on Digital photography - Megapixel net Steve's DIgicams DPreview Imaging Resource . Good sites, some review Rechargeable batteries, PhotoPrinters,.... as well.

I haven't spent to much time with the camera as yet, but I do like it. I've been looking around to get it working in Linux. I think you'll very happy with the A80 or any other Canon in it's price range.
