What difference would it make if Earthly humans ceased to exist? The planets would continue their journey around the Sun. The universe would continue to expand until, like a rubber band, it would snap back. After our demise nothing would change.

Is it so important to gasp for one more breath of air?

The end is inevitable, whether it is 100 years, 1000 years or 10,000 years. Mankind is tied to Earth.

Even it if was possible to terraform and colonize Mars, the ultimate result would only be conflict between the two planets.

If inter-stellar travel was somehow possible it is likely that we would find other intelligent beings. The result would be conflict.

Just a rumination.

Once you, or I, are gone the world ceases to exist anyway, doesn't it?

I for one would be seriously displeased at this stage of my existence, if there is such a thing.

Are you really sure that you exist? You could be nothing more than a thought, you know.

In one sense life means nothing, but in another it means everything. We may be the only conscious life in the universe. We have existed but for a second in 14 billion years. There is wonder and awe so inexpressible and so profound, such feelings of love and joy that one can only vow to save all sentient beings. The nature of love is to wish for more and more of it, to wish it for all life yet unborn. That which is meaningless is sacred when the heart awakens.

This is the end, Beautiful friend
This is the end, My only friend, the end
Of our elaborate plans, the end
Of everything that stands, the end
No safety or surprise, the end
I'll never look into your eyes...again
Can you picture what will be, So limitless and free
Desperately in need...of some...stranger's hand
In a...desperate land
Lost in a Roman...wilderness of pain
And all the children are insane, All the children are insane
Waiting for the summer rain, yeah
There's danger on the edge of town
Ride the King's highway, baby
Weird scenes inside the gold mine
Ride the highway west, baby
Ride the snake, ride the snake
To the lake, the ancient lake, baby
The snake is long, seven miles
Ride the snake...he's old, and his skin is cold
The west is the best, The west is the best
Get here, and we'll do the rest
The blue bus is callin' us, The blue bus is callin' us
Driver, where you taken' us
The killer awoke before dawn, he put his boots on
He took a face from the ancient gallery
And he walked on down the hall
He went into the room where his sister lived, and...then he
Paid a visit to his brother, and then he
He walked on down the hall, and
And he came to a door...and he looked inside
Father, yes son, I want to kill you
Mother...I want to...fuck you
C'mon baby, take a chance with us X3
And meet me at the back of the blue bus
Doin' a blue rock, On a blue bus
Doin' a blue rock, C'mon, yeah
Kill, kill, kill, kill, kill, kill
This is the end, Beautiful friend
This is the end, My only friend, the end
It hurts to set you free
But you'll never follow me
The end of laughter and soft lies
The end of nights we tried to die
This is the end

no, no, no. We are (to our knowledge) the highest form of Awareness in the universe, and therefore the highest forms of the Universe's Self-Awareness. We will continue to find out more about ourselves and about the Universe, until one day we shall be as Gods.

We've come so far in just a few million years. We're but mere steps away from Godhead.

There may well be other Awarenesses in the universe, but that's not something I'm willing to bank the future of the Universe on.

Sooner or later mankind will certainly become extinct. Whether it is due to nuclear war, depletion of the ozone layer, the sun's death before we find another habitable world, etc. etc.

In the meantime I try to find what joy I can in each day.

All of the things in the universe, the smells, sounds, sights, and experiences of the world mean nothing unless there is someone to experience them.

Without us, maybe the earth would heal, and global warming would slow down. Perhaps it would be better for the planet after all the damage we have done. We are but a speck of sand in the vast desert of the universe. There is no guarantee that there would be conflict if we met an alien race, because if we were able to develop interstellar travel, maybe we would by then have grown as a species enough to realize that violence is not the answer to all conflicts.

there would be a lot of happy animals. and a lot of unhappy pets.
DOH! I was initially thinking, I'm fairly certain that if ALL humans ceased to exist, then nobody would miss us, but then you reminded me of our pets. Surely our pets will miss us! A lot of domesticated critters are going to starve to death....

But that won't take long, a few months and all those animals will either survive or die. Within a hundred years or so, our neighborhoods will be overgrown with weeds and plants and trees and bugs and critters.

What's the point of this exercise? We will all be dead, who cares?

What would the point be? If we didn't exist, does global warming matter one way or another. The only reason to care about gloabal warming, etc. Is because we will die sooner if the earth is destroyed. Do you really think that this ball of lava hurtling through space cares how hot it is? Is there a big frowney face on venus? If humanity ceased to exist, all arguments become moot. Nothing is better or worse, there is neither good nor evil (assuming, of course that we are the only sentient life in this void we call the universe).

There would be a lot more water...

The human body is 'supposed' to contain on average about 10 gallons or 38 liters of water. 5.5 billion peeps x 38 liters = 209,000,000,000 liters of water reclaimed from 5.5 billion decomposing bodies.

209 billion liters is enough to fill a volume of about 209,000,000 cubic meters, which is roughly the size of...hell I don't know! But whatever it is, its big.... ;)

that's hardly any water
Well its hardly any water compared to the 11.4 trillion cubic meters of water in Lake Superior, but 2.09 million cubic meters is still a lot larger than your average Olympic swimming pool. lol!

"We're but mere steps away from Godhead."

So, how do you know when you reach Godheadedness. Cause I think I might just be there now.
