Good piece by Noonan about the speech.

"
The address was bold in its assertion of the distance in America between the leaders and the led: “For too long, a small group in our nation’s capital has reaped the rewards of government while the people have borne the cost. Washington flourished—but the people did not share in its wealth. Politicians prospered—but the jobs left, and the factories closed. The establishment protected itself but not the citizens of our country.”

It was an unmistakable indictment of almost everyone seated with him on the platform.

Then a stark vow: “That all changes—starting right here and right now.” Jan. 20 “will be remembered as the day the people became the rulers of this nation again.” "

I thought it was an interesting speech. Of course those who hate Trump will hate the speech, the same reason those who voted for him loved it: it was unapologetically Trump.

What i found interesting was that there was not one mention of liberals, conservatives, republicans, democrats or parties. No talk of unifying the parties. It was a very clear message of framing the discussion as dc and the political elite versus the rest of the country. As he did during the campaign, he's positioning himself as anti-establishment, both the gop and democrats. The media is also included in his political elite. By framing his presidency that way, he can very effectively deflect any criticism - valid or not - as just the political insiders trying to protect their business as usual.

Most of the politically savy (most of us here as well as pundits) vastly underestimate the power of that framing because we look at the details and debate every nuance ad nauseum. The public doesn't.

It was a highly effective strategy in the election, he rode it all the way to the white house despite being hated by the left, the established right, the media and having enough baggage to fill a train. We're going to see if it continues to work now that he's in office.

Agreed. Step 1: kick borderline millionaires out and get ultra billionaires in there. They really care about the little guy.

aye, comrade. This type of rhetoric would be compelling if it weren't so unmistakable and historically chilling for what it actually is.
