I got a 1988 Chevy Beretta with manual transmission for $800 two weeks after I turned 16, of course that was 10 years ago so I'd expect the average person to spend more now days.

Was a great first car IMO, had good power, taught me how to drive stick and was old and beat so I didn't have to worry about dinging up some nice car.

Got the hand me down from my dad. His 97 Saturn SL. No power: windows/locks/steering, no AC/ABS/Cruise annnnddd 165k miles when I got it. Felt like a tin can All I had was engine wheels, brakes and a body, and it was plastic! :p I paid my dad a grand for it my senior year of high school (03).

Sweet ass first car. But alas, didn't have it long, started to have some engine issues because of it's age.

1978 (or was it '77?) Mustang II GHIA. Got it with something like 28k miles on it in 1986 when I was a senior in high school, 16 or 17 years old. I knew the woman who owned it and she really didn't put more miles on it, she just drove it a couple miles back and forth to work five days a week and maybe to the grocery store once in awhile.

My 1st car was an 89 Oldmobile Cutlas Calais with a shitastic quad4 motor. It had 149K miles on it when I got it in 1994. It lasted me about 6 months before I got rid of it. I got a 95 Mitsu Mirage that lasted 5 years before I traded it for a truck.

If you want a reliable vehicle for your 1st, get a Ford or Chevy truck from the late 80's early 90's. I just got a good deal on a 89 Silverado that runs like it was brand new for $3K.

My first car was a geo metro though, and my second was a 64 1/2 mustang.

my parents did give me shiat for my first car...I had to get some pos 94 dodge shadow...I needed it to get to work and such, saved up and bought a 2000 VW Jetta 1.8T.

me is happy that dodge shadow made me 250$! bought it for 100$, someone hit me in a parking lot, extra 150$ (kept the money, left the bumper the way it was), then sold it to someone for 200!

I had a 95 Mazda Protege as my first car that I got back last Nov (2005). It was the worst car ever and it spent more time at my mechanics then it did on the road. After dropping about 3k to fix it in the last 11 months, the air compressor seized last week. We're putting it out to pasteur and my new car is a 2001 Chevy Cavalier. Hopefully it'll last me till next dec. when i graduate college and can get a new decent car.

Get a late 80s/early 90s Volvo 740. Super comfortable, super reliable, and oddly chicks really like them.
