I just bought a T-bird 700 oem with a fan from www.accubyte.com, chip looks pretty authentic, has the 700 etching in the middle of the chip, and i bought a ASUS A7V, installed everything and it runs, BUT the temperature is at 140f idle and when i was installing windows 98 it actually went up to 180f, i thought there was something wrong with the built in thermometer, but i almost burned my hand touching the chip, i got a regular heatsink fan that came with the chip and some silicon paste, a decent antec case with an intake and exhaust fans, i didn't mess with the FSB (it's at 100) or the voltage, the default voltage the bios put was 1.74v, what's going on?!? help...

Sounds like a bad contact between the cpu and heatsink. How much thermal paste did you put on? Maybe air pockets. I would clean the HS and cpu with rubbing alcohol and reapply the thermal paste (very think layer) and try again.

A good way to tell if your HS is installed properly is if your cpu is very hot then your HS should be relatively warm. If it's not then the heat is not being transfered to your HS and you have a bad contact.

The heatsink was relatively warm, but even if i have a bad contact, the chip shouldn't run that hot right?, i mean 140f is pretty damn hot, i have a slot a classic 750 and that runs at 90f...

If you have a bad contact, then the heat will continue to build up until it reaches dangerous levels. So, yes, it can get that hot if you have a bad contact between the HS and cpu.

The first time I installed my gorb, somehow a wire got stuck in the fan and prevented it from turning. My cpu temp went up to 65 degrees celcius.
