I already started it up and left it on after it smoked, nothing came up, no BIOS, nothing, guess I'll try again...


Tried again nothing came up, what should I RMA? cpu and mobo and just list as defective?

POST > Power-On Self-Test. If everything's okay, you usually get a single short beep. It can also tell you what's wrong based on the pattern of beeps. What mobo do you have? Some of the MSIs have a set of LEDs that sort of do the same thing, but better.

There's not really any way to know that unless you test the parts. You're going to need another machine with similar specs (i.e. uses the same RAM, uses a socket-A proc, etc.)... if you don't have one on hand, see if you can find a friend's to use. RMAing is just a gamble (when you don't know the problem) unless you RMA everything. And we're not even 100% sure that it's faulty hardware. I'd really suggest you get someone, IRL, with a little more experience to help you troubleshoot the system.

I think I'm just going to RMA it, but if I do RMA should I RMA video card, harddrive, RAM?

Really sounds like your CPU fried... I've never seen this before, but since there's no evidence of scorching or melting, maybe the socket fried. Maybe get a flashlight and look in all the pinholes for the socket.

I'd just RMA the board and the cpu.

That motherboard does indeed have the 12v P4 power connector. Not having it plugged in on P4 machines results in no POST. I'm not sure if it's the same with AMD systems though. Regardless, I don't see the connector for it coming out of your power supply. You'll need to get a power supply with that square 4-pin connector.

Look over all the cables coming out of your power supply to find this guy. If you don't have it, get a power supply that has it (usually it'll say something about Pentium 4 compatible).

mobobuff: The rest of the unused power cords are placed out of the way, can't see in picture, I am fairly sure there is one in my power supply, where would I plug that in at?
