i could be wrong, but i believe they phased out the actual "defcon" status.
they now have a separate condition for military bases and that post-9/11 colored scale for the public.

I saw that when I went on a base last week. I was wondering what it meant.

But what does that mean? Most of the DoD employees and military people I bump into are unable to tell me WTF these color codes mean.

Those are two different condition indicators, Ponch.

The DEFCON level is the Defense Readiness Condition.

There are other Condition levels such as THREATCON and INFOCON.

We are currently at DEFCON 3 and INFOCON 5.
