What cpu will you use in your next upgrade or new system?

I personaly have a 1800+ XP and I think its awsome, I do however have an itch to try out one of those P4 Northwoods. Ever since I own'd my first AMD system I'v been on a mission to have a quiet machine!, and I mean *WHISPER QUIET*, I just dont see AMD pulling that off.

I've used AMD since I upgraded from my old Intel 486 DX2 66.

Never had any problems w/stability. In the early days, there was a trade-off on performance vs. price, but
I have always been a bargain shopper.

Now, there is no trade-off w/AMD. Their performance is on par, or better, with the Intel cpu's - for a fraction
of the price.

Unless that radically changes, It's a no brainer - AMD.

<< Last year AMD was the cpu of choice for most of Anand's forum citizens who build or upgrade their systems. I am curious, for personal use which make of cpu do you plan on upgrading to or building a new system around this year. >>

Unless Intel can bring down the price of their P4 processors to where they're comparable to AMD's Athlon XP processors, I'll be getting an Athlon XP (unknown speed, depends on how much extra I have to spend).
Yeah, it sucks to be a high school student with a very limited budget. 🙁

Just upgraded to XP 1900. Should arrive tomorrow afternoon. Chose AMD for price and performance. System will be used primarily for gaming and I won't be overclocking, so stability won't be an issue. I have always paid special attention to my cooling methods so XP is not a hassle at all.

AMD all the way.

Price vs performance AMD is a MUCH better deal than the intel chips.

Stability, well, lets just say I've been running AMD for several upgrades now and the only stability issues I've had have been directly traceable to stupid stuff I myself did.

Intel would have to beat AMD's performance by nearly double for me to even consider breaking my AMD addiction.

northwood for me... mainly cuz of the heat... i'm trying to minimize heat as much as i can for my next "quiet" system, while maintaining some performance; right now performance isnt as important as keeping it quiet... and amd is jes too hot for me.

I my personal choice would be a AMD AlthonXP, but I have been selling quite a few P4's lately. I guess Intel's marketing is paying off.

AMD. So far my 1.2 gig T-bird has been great! I don't see any reason to switch....at least not right now. I'm perfectly happy with my AMD. 🙂
Only thing that bugs me is my constant desire to "keep up with the Jones's" in faster processing and video. I have no need to upgrade....but
when I read a lot of these new articles about new processors, it still makes me curious about upgrading. Sometimes I hate curiosity......

I consider that heat-"problem" a myth !

I dont have a heat problem at all with my *overclocked* AMD XP1800 running at XP2000 speed.

I dont even have a special fast spining fan, but instead got a very slow 8cm case fan on my cooler which is 2900rpm and *barely* noticeable.....(if at all...)
(47C/48C is the most i've ever seen on my CPU under load, prime95, seti, whatever...)

If you're concerned about heat...they sell the alpha8045 cooler now for $29.99 at SVC...and i'd rather go with a good cooler like the alpha than thinking "Oh..i need an Intel because of 'the heat' or 'the noise' " <- it's just NOT TRUE !

same here..it may the case that VIA chipsets MAY have some issues...

but your post reads like "AMD CPUs" are in-stable and in-compatible.

Maybe that's the last straw Intel pulls out when there's a debate AMD vs. Intel.

"INTEL [Pentium...] is more stable and compatible"....well...another statement i'd consider an urban legend 🙂

I'm voting for AMD. However, the P4 is looking better and better. Things may change if AMD doesn't release the Thoroughbred pretty soon. Hopefully the Thoroughbred will still be Socket A compatible. If so, I may get a 1.8GHz-2GHz Thoroughbred.

I didn't even mention AMD in that post. All I said was that Intel provided a more stable solution. I didn't even mention processors. Any inferrances you made that I was talking about processors would come from your own predispositions.
