I am however getting a GTX 970 at christmas time.

So I mainly play minecraft modpacks which is very CPU intensive. The CPU I have can handle low settings on a big modpack but I want one that can handle a big world on high settings and get 60+ fps..so any suggestions ?

Get a 4790k. I'm not going to recommend the 5775c since board support for that chip is spotty (though Asus is apparently one of the board manufacturers doing a good job of supporting that chip). The 4790k will definitely work, and you can try pegging all the cores at the max turbo speed (4.4 GHz) for a nice speed boost in everything. You might need a better HSF for that though.

I think this is more of a budget build, so he isn't going to want a $320 cpu.
His whole build is $500.

Hmm... Here is a crazy idea. If you mainly play minecraft, and you will be getting a 970 in about 2 months, then why not just use onboard graphics? Integrated graphics aren't much, but surely they could handle minecraft.

Also, why do you have two types of memory listed? You should stick to two 4 gb sticks.

You could save some money in some areas for sure.
You don't need 750W PSU. Save $40
You could get a cheaper case. Save $30

Just an example, though the PSU seems like great value with the rebate.

With rebates: $90 today, $100 tomorrow

EDIT: Do you already have the 630 and windows 7? I don't see any prices listed for that card on pcpartpicker.

Ahh, I guess I am used to people using PCPARTLIST for new builds. I thought you meant the current system you plan on building, ohh well forget all that lol.

What kind of budget do you have for a new CPU?

Exactly. A 4790k fits his budget and is the best st performance you can get @ stock.

Confusing post, actually.

OP, are you sure you are cpu limited? If I read your post correctly, you are currently using a GT630 video card. That is a *very* weak card, barely if at all better than the igp of your cpu. The fact that you can handle low settings on the mods, but apparently not higher settings, would indicate that you are gpu limited.

Use MSI afterburner or some other program to monitor your cpu and gpu usage and see which one is at max. Even in a cpu intensive game, I cant imagine a haswell i5 not being able to feed a GT630.

If you are cpu limited, then as others suggested, 4790 or 4790k should drop into your motherboard. But your current cpu must turbo 3.3 ghz or higher, so even at 4.2ghz turbo for the 4790k you are only looking at about 25% improvement, and considerably less for the 4790 non-k. (You would also be getting hyperthreading, but I dont think Minecraft would be helped by that.)

Honestly, I am not sure it is worth it. I suppose you could sell the 4460 to recoup some of the cost. But if you are getting a GTX 970 in a couple of months, I think I would hold off on cpu replacement and see how the game performs with a better gpu.

I don't play minecraft, but from what I can gather on a quick google search shows that it's mostly single threaded.

Stock I7 4790k yields the best single thread performance.
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/singleThread.html

this.. Its java and its singlethreaded. I assume that java likes its caches too so the i7 with the bigger L2 and highest singlethreaded perf.
Or get a vetted i5k with a guranteed overclock?
Also, minecraft, rather java uses some opengl wrapper but for what I am seeing that 970gtx is way way overkill, might wanna go lighter on the gfx budget and up the cpu budget

edit : also be sure to be running the latest java and 64-bit, this way you get the best performing JVM and you can allocate all the memory you want to it.
