I would recommend the X2 3800+

Ive recently bought an X2 3800+ after using a 3500+ for about 6 months and it is so much faster. I also have it running fine at 2.25ghz rather than the default 2.0ghz clock speed.

My board is an Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe, good board only one problem, the chipset fan lasted less than 3 weeks before failing. Replaced it with a zalman nb47j fanless northbridge heatsink! much quiter and still cool. I hear the chipset fan issue has been fixed on the premium boards so I would probably go for the A8N-SLI Plemium :)

Well for the best price/performance- NONE- Just get either the new epox 754 SLI board or the abit PCI-e 754 board and overclock your current CPU. It will drive that 7800GT just fine. Save the cash for socket M2!

Otherwise if you really want a new toy to play with(CPU) I would have to vote for the X2 also.

Edit- just went through and saw the 8 HD thing- not sure if these 2 mobos have enough HD ports- could check out DFIs Ultra Infinity s754 also.
