thinking about investing in a laptop, wanting to go low-end, but don't want a complete dog. any recommendations on intel vs. amd? i think i've heard that the amd64 laptops are much better than the celerons or pentium m's.

your thoughts much appreciated.

Only real difference between Celeron M and Pentium M is the battery life. Performance is pretty similar.

Not quite.. The Pentium M has more cache and the P-M models have higher clock speeds..

No that's just not true, but for the price of the Celeron Mobiles compared to the Pentium's, it may be worth someones money to stick with the Celeron M.

Based on my useage experiences I have found the following:

Celerons SUCK!!! Avoid them like the plague. (The were pretty good back in the 300A days when they would do a 50% overclock but new ones - UGH) - (I know that this was a desktop processor - just a comment.)

The P4M is better but the netburst architecture does not adapt all that well to the mobile environment. This one is at least not plague ridden.

Intel's best offering IMHO is the Pentium M. It is actually strongly based on an older architecture (The PIII) but works pretty well. This is what I am using at the moment. It is decent.

OK - Now I will get flamed as a Fanboy so I will not go into great details. If you have the opportunity to get an AMD - DO IT. Their product is excellent just not as well known and marketed. Even their cheap ones are pretty good.

not sure if the AMD mobile are anywhere near the Pentium-M's!!

I believe this is one arena where Intel are winning at the moment!

Yeah, low voltage A64 designed for mobile competition to the P-M is good. :)
