What CPU is better, AMD Barton or AMD XP type?

I guess i dont understand what the diffrence is between the AMD bartons and the normal XP series cpus. If an amd XP 2700+ and barton 2600 were side by side in comparison, which would be faster?

Also, could i use an AMD XP 1800+ cpu in an old KT7A-RAID mobo? Im looking here in the manual and all it says that it will support amd athlons cpus. Is the XP 1800+ an Athlon? I see it still has the same pin 462 pin count?

Barton has an L2 cache of 512, others have 256. Some will say that 2700 is faster than the 2600 cuz the rating (ie, 2600 or 2700) takes into account the cache. I don't agree,AFAIK the rating or speed is the mathematical result of bandwith in MHz times the multiplier. So i don't understand how the extra cache is figured in this formula. 'Course, I'm not a computer scientist either

dang it... i dunno what the speeds are equivalent to!!!

the only difference besides the clockspeed is the amount of L2 cache they have.

XP's have 256 Kb of L2
bartons have 512 Kb of L2



the extra 256 Kb of L2 doesn't seem to make a HUGE difference in performance...

usually about 100 mhz more on a XP will be equivalent to that of a barton

so a 2.2 barton = 2.3 tbred

the speeds are supposed to be equivalent to how fast the processor is compared to how fast a tbird of the same clock speed would be, if they had kept making them. So theoretically cache IS taken into account. But I don't know.

I'd still get the barton, or even better, the mobile barton. Overclocking++

you guys are going to confuse him.

XP is the line of processors AMD makes,it spans across many different cores. Barton is the name of the processor core put on the XP processor line. So by saying 2700+ XP it is asumed to be a thoroughbred core becuase i think thats all they make for the 2700. its also asumed to be 333FSB.

thoroughbred cores have 256k of cache, bartons have 512k. they are the same core aside that the barton has an extra 256k of cached added on, and it does in fact effect performance. the barton has an edge not only in cache but specially if it runs 400fsb vs the thoroughbreds 333fsb.

i hope this cleared up a few things.
