what country to move to before the US economy collapses?

1. somewhere insulated from this financial mess
2. place where the dollar is worth something now
3. high standard of living similar to the US
4. lower cost of living than US
5. can get by with english

western europe, japan, HK are all out of the picture due to 1, 2 and 4.
anywhere else?

That place doesn't exist.

But if you aren't making much money now anyway you can go teach English overseas for $20k/year, get 4 weeks paid vacation and have a very low cost of living.

Iceland. They're doing awesome. All three of their major banks are bankrupt and the government has had its UK assets frozen by the UK PM.

malaysia or singapore. your dollar will go further in malaysia. cities in malaysia you can have a high standard of living, maybe not as good as singapore, but pretty good.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but the US is not alone in this. If the US economy collapses, major markets across the world will take a hit. Japan might be the only one to not take a nosedive in the event of a US collapse.

Jesus, if Japan is an precedent, Iraq will be doing excellent in half a century! We destroy former Japan, help build up a new Japan, and they may basically surpass us (and already have in some ways). Imagine Iraq in 2050! Dubai will look like Chicago to Iraq's Tokyo. They'll have to take over Kuwait though, because without nice coastal property, Iraq's got nothing on Dubai. 😉

I loved Iceland when I was stationed there.
Too bad they are having problems. As small as they are I worry they wont be able to weather the storm like America.

Is the Japan economy really that great? I honestly have no idea, but I remember reading about a huge stock market crash in Japan and how their economy has never really recovered. It happen around 1990 I'm guessing judging by this.

Uh, Canada?

yup. Banks are fine, expected to have the highest GDP Growth of the G8(although < 1%)2009, Taxes going down(depending on outcome of Election), Government expects to maintain Surplus despite slowdown, Jobs still being created, Hockey!

Just checkout Immigration regulations before coming. Illegal Immigrants get found in Canada. They're the ones shivering in the Cold turning themselves in to survive!!

Canada or Australia. Luckily, there are some nice AT members from both countries. Anybody from either country want to offer me housing and food for the next 10 years? 😛
