Glad you got it fixed OP! It may have taken longer than you wanted, but you (and I) learned a bit along the way. I'll remember the part on checking for fuel flow for sure.

How does one check for spark at the coil wire? Care to elaborate for future reference?
I just told you. A wire goes from the coil to the center terminal of the distributor cap. It's how the spark travels to the distributor which then sends it to the spark plugs through the spark plug wires. Remove that wire at the distributor, put the end close to a metallic part of the engine and have an assistant crank it over.

On the contrary. I didn't jump to a diagnosis at all, based on my tests I confirmed the fuel pump is bad. I did check the fuses. And I have no reason to believe there's a short anywhere.
I see no mention of checking the relay. Did you do that? Few people if any suspect they have a short when they in fact do have a short. Feelings = bad, evidence = good. I have no reason to believe that I have cancer but it's possible I have it.

Do I think you have a short? Nope. That usually is indicated by a blown fuse (but not always). But the relay, boy it's such a simple fix versus dropping the gas tank and the expense of replacing the fuel pump... If there is another relay that is the same in the car, a simple temporary swap can rule that out pretty quick.

The gas tank think I definitely misunderstood you about.

Yup checked the relay, it's good. The wire at the coil is interesting, I will definitely remember that. I still think testing for fuel before spark is best IMO.

I know a fair amount about cars but I still make dumb errors. That's why I take it to the shop or post it online so people can point out my dumb mistakes :)

When troubleshooting, the first to check off the list: is it fuel , electrical or mechanical? I usually make the decision after listening to the customer complaint and a brief check of the product.
