What could cause my AIWA stereo's CD player to no longer play CDs?

I haven't used the CD player that much...at first it wouldn't play any audio CD that was BURNED. I thought that might be because of bad media or something. NOW it won't play any CD that was purchased either.

Does my CD player only need to be cleaned or is something (laser) out of alignment?

Thanks

i think its a known issue w/ aiwa that their stereo cd players are utter garbage...my stereo cd player has failed, so has the ones my friends own

Heh.. happened to the guy I lived with 2 years ago at school. His stereo just died one day for no reason. Think was such a POS.

I ran into this problem about a year or so after I got my Aiwa stereo (bookshelf-size system w/tray-type 3disc changer). Turned out all that had to be done was that the laser needed to be cleaned off. It's been working fine ever since.

clean the laser with a cotton swab and some rubbing alcohol. i saw a best buy guy do that to a woman's machine (and charge her $30 for it) and it fixed her prob.

I had a similar problem once with my old Aiwa stereo and it turned out that the laser was out of alignment. IIRC, laser alignment is pretty expensive (~$100) unless you have a place that fixes anything that is wrong with your stereo (no matter what it is) for a single price. As for their players being utter garbage, I've only had this one problem with 1 of the 2 Aiwa minisystems I've had (and still have) in the past 8 years. Maybe I've just gotten lucky.

i have an AIWA CDC-MP3 which is still in teh shop. it had a problem with reading mp3's, so it went in, came back 2 weeks later couldnt read mp3's or cd's. so it went back in, and 2 weeks laterplayed cd's fine but no mp3's, then a week later it comes back the system plays fine but no display. they bent a few pins on teh display interface. Now its been there for over a month.. 🙁

I am going to call store and ask them if they are ever going to give it back to me or give me a new peice? technically that was the 4th repair and the store policy is that by the end of the 3rd if they cant fix it they got to replace it. but it did get fixed but it went back in for something else.

OK, that's the correct answer. It's just easier to say that Aiwa is no good. They used to have semi-decent mini systems in the 80s, but times have changed.

Be aware that while it is true that the laser pickup must be properly aligned, I'm quite sure that if it goes out of alignment due to wear in the plastic guides, it cannot be realigned and must be replaced.

Heh, no kidding. After Sony bought them out, all their stuff went to hell.

Here's what you do. If it's still under warranty, get it fixed. When you get it back, make sure it works, Ebay that sh*t and never touch another Aiwa product again. Then go buy yourself something decent like a Pioneer.
