PEOPLE DO NOT NEED COMPUTERS TO LIVE You are not making their lives any better. With old people, you are doing them no favor. God, you want people that can't figure out how to set the time on their microwave to be able to figure out a PC?

Have fun with explaining why the screen goes down when you tell them to scroll up.

You think you will be able to teach them how to attach pictures to e-mail. "Go to C:\My Documents". Have fun with that.

Oh, and you want them to upload pictures fro ma digital camera? Hahahahah

I'm a grandmother and I have a dell. I do recommend the big screen, my fellow old people get all excited when they see my big monitor. And, get the simplest keyboard you can find. Us old people spent a lot of time with typewriters.

if they live states away, you should install some sort of remote access with superuser access so you can fix anything software related without trekking out there yourself

as people get old and disconnected from society it is good to give them options/tools. learning can keep their minds young, open new doors. user friendliness of new tech is much better these days. user experience has improved greatly as well. with broadband and a fast computer its become a rich and easy to use experience. not like the past where using a pc was a chore...dial up slow and mind numbing etc

I have configured desktops for seniors that have shortcut icons for 95% of user functions. I've found that most seniors do not like to drill down through menus to get to a program.

Yup - ive been doing this for a while and it saves me so much hassles.... when theyre online.

However, when the computer is offline ("my internets is broken!") or some HW issue preventing bootup (or so claimed) then my hands are tied...

I wish. My aunt is hopeless and isn't even 70 yet. She's gotten it in her head that to get to a website, you go to google first and then enter the URL into their search field. And that's just an example. I guess it depends on the person.

A cousin gave my grandmother a Mac laptop, not sure of exactly which line. I'd consider a Mac Mini or a EEE Box if she needed it replaced.

That's funny, whenever I go to Best Buy and try out the Macs I usually have no idea what I'm doing.

I think that you should hook them up with a Packard Bell 486 with a 14.4 USRobotics modem and AOL and then place bets on whether they die before any pages load.

Truth. There are a lot of condescending asses on this board. My mother is on her 2nd PC now and she is now 79. She's not firing up WoW but she gets what she needs to get done done.

Mac Mini with Leopard installed, then just Boot Camp Windows XP, so they can always fall back to XP if they are having temporary problems with transitioning to Mac.

Add a 19 inch 1440 x 900 LCD (or 22 inch widescreen should also have big pixels so text is large) and they should be set.

They don't have to shut down and reboot the system all the time (very stable operating system), it wakes very quickly with tap on keyboard, and goes to sleep on it's own if they just walk away from the computer and leave it idle. It also draws like 40w, so it is very energy efficient.
