What computer would be better?

My specs:
Pentium 4 HT @ 3GHZ
1.5GB PC3200 RAM
450 watt fortron psu
eVGA 7800GT CO @ 490/1220
X-Fi Xtreme music sound card

His specs:
AMD 64 3500+ @ stock
1GB PC3200 RAM
305 watt pos psu
PNY 7800GT @ 400/1000
Realtek integrated sound

I say mine performs better, he says his does, what would you say is more likly to deliver better fps in most games?

Hehe yah a benchmark would tell you for sure.. no "what ifs?".

But because your vid cards are the same except your card is clocked higher, and because you have more ram, I would say that your machine would run games with higher fps (even though it is an Intel P4 🙂 )

The real question here is perform better doing what.

If its games, I'd lean towards yours being better due to having more memory (helps with some games, doesn't matter for others though, since he has a fair amount). Your video card should offer a nice improvement since its clocked roughly 20% higher. Couple that with the x-Fi, and all of that should add up to overcoming his better CPU.

For general tasks, its basically a toss-up and its stupid to argue. Oh, mine opens Word .0024 seconds faster, I win.

I would rather have yours since you don't lose much in the CPU realm and have enough RAM that if a game needs more than 1GB you're covered. Games should play smoother, and the sound quality should be much better all around (movies, music, games).

Thanks, what game would be a good benchmark?
edit: Games we both have include:
F.E.A.R.
Battlefield 2
Need for Speed Most Wanted
Doom 3

Any of those games should be good for benching. There are Time Demos which you both can run to test your gaming systems. Try running 3dmark 01/03/05/06 as well to test your systems.

Lol, how does he power his video card?

Appartly 7800GT's work without the external power plug either, I think performance might be lowered a bit if not a lot.

The problem is that 3dmark does not use sound which would not reflect gaming performance. I was thinking about using the F.E.A.R. benchmark to see what happens.

well, his cpu is better then yours, but you psu, sound card, ram and graphic card is better. tell him that he needs to buy a better psu cause his 7800 might be in low power mode. the ram helps with loading times (slightly) and the x-fi helps with the sounds. the main reason you system might perform better is cause you graphic card is clocked higer. if he buys a better psu and oc's his cpu and graphic card, his system will definently beat yours cause you use a sucky p4.

You could just run the FEAR "Test Video Settings" benchmark in the game menu. Agree on all of the settings with your friend, or a couple sets of different settings, and see who has the highest min/avg/max FPS. FEAR makes it really really easy with this feature.

And like others have said, yours should win since your GPU is clocked higher. RAM won't make much if any difference in FPS.

this may be the first time i've ever seen anyone use this word on these forums...

OP, yours'll win, hands down. why do you even bother asking?

there's a low power mode for 7800 Gt's r u sure?

Sound is not going to affect the systems that much (maybe 1 or 2% at most so an extra couple fps in games).. even with it not testing sound, yours should still win because you have a higher clocked card and more ram.

probly the intel system (yours) cause u have better clockspeeds on graphics, better ram (but a strange ammount, 1.5gb) better psu (sounds reliable) and amazing sound. The only down side to your system is the pentium but i think that cpu is better then the 3500+.

the only why your system would get lower fps is if you have spyware and/or some hardware is breaking down

edit: whats the latencys of the ram (that important for fps and stuff)

yes but it lowers the performance a TON he should plug it in really, i tryed my 6800gs with and without 6pin connecter and i could not belive the difference

all he has to do is upgrade his PSU and give a little more ram... all in all under a hundred dolalr upgrade, and he wins 🙂
