LOL anyone remember the fans that came with the AMD 2000+? It sounded like a shop vac. I think that thing was like 7,000 RPM lol.

Now it's not any better, we have heat sinks that are big enough to club an elephant to death in a single hit.

That's not true.

While a 32bit program cannot use more than 2GB, the OS can certainly address more. It's not an open and shut case and some hardware and drivers had lots of issues addressing memory beyond the 2GB limit. However, when it worked, it was nice.

My board then supported 12GB RAM.

Today, mid and high end workstation/server boards can support 2TB of RAM!

Why is a heatsink a problem? Is it bigger than an average Canuck?

generic red led 60mm fan

It was an advent 3618 store bought comp i souped up. First PC where I truly messed around with the internals. It came with 512mb ram and a geforce fx5200 which was utter shite. Couldn't even manage vice city but the 9800 pro tore that game apart!

Any Athlon XP with a Palomino core required obscene amounts of cooling IIRC (the HSF on mine ran at 5000rpm according to a page I wrote on my site). I started with a 1800+. Based on the reviews of the Thoroughbred cores I considered hopping to that, but I think I ended up waiting and got the Barton 2500+ instead. Later, a friend gave me his 3200+ for free when he upgraded.

I remember some P4's back then and an Opteron 240, moved to Athlon 64's when they came out, then Athlon x2 64's with a few Opertons thrown in. Of course, that covered a few years in the early 2000's.
