Im guessing it may be 1GB DDR ECC DIMM's

or some big ass exotic processors like the SUN one's

only stuff in mass production so nothing like the 5 atom quantum computers.

I remember reading about these battery back up things that you put on your hard drive and cost about $250,000.

Anyone konw what I'm talking abuot? It was on CNET's DREAM MACHINE about 5 years back that had a PII-400mhz and a Canopus Voodoo I card..

most likely 512meg Rambus[t] RIMMs.

or (this might not classify, but it exists) my friend told me his brother's workplace had a $60 000 wireless network card that had a 100 km range.

on the other end of the scale would be the UPS..

battery backups to put on your HD??

seems like something that would be either fairly hefty considering battery technology or fairly useless considering that it could be supported by a HD.

at one time, RDRAM was worth its weight in gold. Not sure what it is now, but I would tend to think a server processor.

Goldenbear, are you thinking of a solid-state hard drive?

AFAIK, a solid state hard-drive would be like a multgigabyte compactflash or smartmedia card

the only time I've heard about them are in threads like these ;)

basically HDs where there are no moving parts, there are a number of technologies that can do that, i am too lazy to look around now though.

uhh... that stuff is server backups as in stuff that weighs hundreds of kg's which would mean that it wouldnt have a very high price/weight ratio.

assuming they weight 100kg's for $300000

then it would have a price to weight ratio of $3000 per kg or $3 per gram. Even 256MB RAM whcih would weigh about 10 gms would have a far higher ratio.

Raid cards sometimes have batteries on them so if you crash during a write operation you don't loose the data. It simply writes it the next time it gets powered up because the battery let it remember the data.

Not necessarily. The Quantum Rushmore drives are regular 3.5" drive sized, & they're what... $14,000 apiece for a 536 MB drive?
